At least one in four former NFL players showed evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) at the time of death, according to a new study published Tuesday in the British Medical Journal. The research was led by Mass General Brigham, Boston University and the Concussion & CTE Foundation.

Researchers examined all former players who died between 2008 and 2021, including 235 who donated their brains. More than nine in 10 of those donated brains showed signs of CTE. Even the most conservative estimate puts prevalence at about 25 per cent.
