2. LIV Golf files for bankruptcy protection with over $500M in debt

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday in New Jersey with more than $500 million in debt, part of its goal to revive the league without Saudi funding.

The move was widely expected after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund abruptly ended its financial support this year, with the final event held last month in Indiana and four vendors already filing lawsuits over unpaid bills. CEO Scott O'Neil said LIV has agreed to a restructuring plan with BC Partners as its primary source of capital.

O'Neil has described a "LIV Golf 2.0" that would feature players as majority owners, expand the field from 57 to 75 players and introduce a 54-hole cut. The filing listed Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith as the four biggest player creditors, and LIV aims to emerge from bankruptcy as early as 2027.

4. Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers agree to three-year extension

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed on a $165 million, three-year contract extension, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Mayfield revived his career in Tampa Bay after replacing Tom Brady in 2023, making the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons while leading the Bucs to consecutive NFC South titles. He was entering the final season of a three-year, $100 million deal.

Mayfield started all 17 games last season, passing for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns with 11 interceptions, but Tampa Bay went 8-9 and missed the playoffs.

Kazuma Okamoto and Josh Smith homered, and José Soriano worked seven innings of two-run ball as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Athletics 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Smith's 360-foot shot opened the scoring in the second inning, and Okamoto followed with the 30th home run of his rookie season — joining White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami as the only other Japanese-born player to reach the mark in a rookie campaign. It was also the first time in MLB history that three rookies have hit 30 or more homers in the same season.

Toronto improved to 73-73, sitting one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL wild-card spot.

6. New stadium announced for Winnipeg's women's soccer team

Officials from all levels of government and the Northern Super League announced Tuesday that Winnipeg's expansion women's soccer team will play in a new modular stadium at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

League president Christina Litz noted that the first national training camp of Canada's women's national team was held on the same grounds in 1986. Winnipeg was announced as the league's first expansion team on July 14, bringing the Northern Super League to seven teams.

The roughly 4,500-seat stadium will receive $2.1 million from the federal government, $750,000 from the province and $600,000 from the city. The franchise was co-founded by Olympic gold medallist Desiree Scott and Rob Gale, and will kick off next season.

7. Otto Jelinek, Canadian figure skating champion, dead at 86

Otto Jelinek, a former world figure skating champion and federal cabinet minister, has died at the age of 86. His brother Henry said Jelinek died peacefully Saturday at Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, Ont., after living with Parkinson's disease for nearly 20 years.

Born in Prague in 1940, Jelinek arrived in Canada in 1952 after his family fled Czechoslovakia's communist government. He and his sister Maria represented Canada in pairs figure skating at the 1960 Winter Olympics, and won gold at the 1962 world championships in Prague.

Jelinek entered federal politics in 1972 and spent 21 years in Parliament, serving as national revenue minister under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. In 2013, Stephen Harper appointed him Canada's ambassador to the Czech Republic.

8. Study finds 31 Australian rugby league players had CTE

A study has found that 31 rugby league players in Australia were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Of 51 rugby league players' brains donated, 31 were found to have CTE, with the players ranging from their 20s to 40s and from amateur to professional levels. CTE can only be diagnosed after death and has also been found in former NFL players.

The paper was presented by molecular biologist Jennifer Cropley at the International Sports Concussion Conference in Melbourne on Tuesday. Late NRL star player and coach Paul Green and Keith Titmuss, who was 20 when he died in 2020, were among those identified.

9. Crosby wants to keep playing for a number of years

Sidney Crosby said Tuesday he is talking with the Pittsburgh Penguins about another contract, with agent Pat Brisson speaking to general manager Kyle Dubas.

The 39-year-old has one season remaining on the two-year, $17.4 million contract he signed in September 2024. He said he wants to play as long as he can and is motivated to represent Canada at the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.

Crosby led the Penguins with 74 points (29 goals, 45 assists) in 68 games last season, averaging a point per game for an NHL-record 21st straight season. He has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh, winning three Stanley Cups.

After being traded to the Florida Panthers, Brady Tkachuk said Tuesday at the NHL media tour that chasing the Stanley Cup alongside his brother Matthew "is going to be awesome."

The 26-year-old left the Ottawa Senators via trade on June 21 after eight seasons, the last five as captain. He had 463 points (213 goals, 250 assists) in 572 games for Ottawa.

The Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2023 and won the Cup in 2024 and 2025. Brady called playing with his brother a dream come true they would have considered "insane" growing up.
