A person was struck by a GO train in Mississauga on Saturday night, leading to the shutdown of a portion of the Lakeshore West line. There was no GO train service between Port Credit and Exhibition stations.

Emergency crews were called to a train crossing on Ogden Avenue, south of Fourth Street, shortly before 8 p.m. The circumstances were not immediately known. The incident caused "significant delays" on the line, with GO buses running express between Port Credit and Kipling GO stations.

Two train trips on the Lakeshore East line were also cancelled. Regular service resumed shortly before 10 p.m.

2. Leger Happiness Index shows Canadians happier than a year ago

Canadians are feeling happier than a year ago, according to Leger's Happiness Index 2026. The national average sat at 70.5 out of 100, up from 68.7 the previous year.

Quebec ranked happiest at 74.5, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador (71.0) and New Brunswick (70.3). Ontario landed in the middle at 69.3, while Prince Edward Island came last at 67.7, up slightly from 66.5 a year earlier.

Among large cities, Montreal came first at 72.7, Brampton second at 71.7 (up five points from 66.7 in 2025), and Toronto third at 69.4 (up from 65.8 a year earlier). Americans scored 70.5 overall — the same as Canada. The online survey polled 63,710 Canadians and 6,408 Americans aged 18 and up between June 9 and 29.

3. Two men dead after single-vehicle crash in North York

Two people are dead after a single-vehicle crash in North York early Saturday morning. Toronto police say officers responded to the area of Romfield Lane and Finch Avenue West just before 5 a.m.

Duty Insp. Peter Wallace said a 39-year-old man was driving with a 42-year-old male passenger when the vehicle struck a light pole. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially said the impact knocked down the traffic light pole and deployed the vehicle's airbags.

"This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased," Wallace said. The intersection remains closed while the reconstruction unit investigates. The posted speed limit in the area is 60 km/h, and police said the road was dry at the time.

4. Woman struck by SUV on midtown sidewalk dies, 18-year-old charged

A 37-year-old woman has died after being struck by an SUV that mounted a curb in midtown Toronto on Friday afternoon. Toronto police provided the update on Saturday.

Police said an 18-year-old man driving a white Nissan Pathfinder northbound on Bathurst Street lost control and mounted the curb near Lonsmount Drive, striking the woman who was walking on the sidewalk. She was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Saturday.

The driver, 18-year-old Jacob Sanchez, was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death. It is the city's 34th fatal collision of the year.

5. Woman seriously injured after being hit by truck in Keelesdale

A female pedestrian was hit by a truck in Keelesdale, Toronto police say. It happened near Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue West shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Police say the pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the truck remained at the scene.

6. Police seek two suspects in Toronto Islands alcohol theft

Toronto police have released images of two suspects accused of stealing alcohol from a restaurant on Toronto Islands. Police said the pair allegedly broke into the restaurant on Aug. 28 around 2:10 a.m. and took an assorted quantity of alcohol before fleeing on foot.

In a news release Saturday, police released descriptions of the male and female suspects, both 25 years old. The male suspect is six feet tall with a medium build, last seen wearing dark pants, a white dress shirt with a black vest, and a white ball cap.

The female suspect is believed to be five-foot-10 with a thin build and long blonde hair, last seen wearing a black shirt and black shorts.

7. Snowbirds wrap up Toronto shows until at least the 2030s

Jets roared over downtown Toronto on Saturday as the Canadian International Air Show featured one of the final Snowbirds flights over Ontario's capital until at least the 2030s. The nine-jet Canadian Armed Forces aerobatic team will be grounded at the end of the 2026 season as their signature CT-114 Tutor jets are replaced by the CT-157 Siskin II.

The team is scheduled to perform twice more over the Labour Day long weekend before heading to northern Ontario. The Snowbirds have performed some 2,700 times in the Tutor jets since 1971.

Defence Minister David McGuinty said in May that negotiations are underway with the manufacturer of the team's new Siskin jets. The Snowbirds' final show is set for Nov. 15 at the Grey Cup in Calgary.

8. Jazz Aviation flight attendants vote for strike mandate

A union representing more than 1,000 flight attendants with Jazz Aviation says members have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike mandate. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union says 99 per cent of voting members supported the mandate after months of bargaining.

Jazz Aviation operates flights under the Air Canada Express brand. Union president Marsha Walters says they want members fairly compensated. The flight attendants have been without a contract since Jan. 1.

Halifax-based Jazz, which is owned by Chorus Aviation, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

9. Cross-border travel rebounds, but some Canadians stay home amid U.S. trade tensions

Latest Statistics Canada figures show Canadians are beginning to return to the United States in greater numbers after a sharp decline last year. There were more than 2.27 million Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by automobile and air in July 2026, up 10.2 per cent from July 2025 — the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

But the rebound remains far from complete. Canadian residents made about 1.9 million return trips by automobile in July, up 12.8 per cent from a year earlier but still 28.9 per cent below July 2024 levels; air travel was down 26.8 per cent from two years ago.

Statistics Canada says the increase largely reflects comparison with 2025, when travel to the U.S. dropped sharply amid geopolitical tensions. Some border residents say the trade tensions have shifted their spending, with some choosing to "buy Canadian" for now.

10. Athletics Canada says member missing while climbing in the Alps

Athletics Canada says one of its members went missing while attempting to break a mountain-running record in the Alps along the Switzerland-Italy border. The national sport governing body said in a statement that Kalie McCrystal was last seen on Tuesday.

The skyrunner and mountaineer was climbing Italy's Matterhorn, a roughly 4,481-metre peak that overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt. The statement says McCrystal has many years of experience in technical and high-altitude environments and has climbed the Matterhorn before — "This was therefore not her first ascent of the mountain."

The statement did not give details on the record she was trying to break. Athletics Canada's website lists the hometown of an athlete with McCrystal's name as Squamish, B.C.
