The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Sunday evening in Cleveland to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven ALCS, leaving them one win from the third World Series appearance in franchise history.
Drew Rasmussen dominated over seven innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six. Tampa Bay scored in each of the first three innings: Jonny DeLuca's bases-loaded walk forced in the first run, Jonathan Aranda singled home another and Toronto-born catcher Liam Hicks added an RBI single in the third.
Cleveland was forced into another bullpen game after Parker Messick lasted just two innings. Game 6 is back at Tropicana Field, where Freddy Peralta starts for the Rays after throwing six shutout innings in Game 2. Yandy Diaz had three hits and scored the first run, saying afterward: "It all ends tomorrow. We're going to win tomorrow."

2. Ben Simmons Tears Achilles in Practice, Out for Season
Source: The Guardian
Sacramento Kings guard Ben Simmons tore his right Achilles tendon during a live drill in practice and will undergo surgery, missing the entire season. The injury comes three days before Sacramento's season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers.
The 30-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Kings to revive his career. The former No. 1 draft pick and three-time All-Star has spent five years battling injuries and mental health issues, and sat out all of last season. "This injury is another chapter in my journey, not the end of my story," Simmons wrote on Instagram.
Simmons had shown encouraging signs in preseason, including 26 minutes in a loss to San Antonio. Dwight Howard, Dirk Nowitzki and Blake Griffin had all publicly backed his comeback.

3. Miami No. 1 in AP Top 25 for First Time Since 2002
Source: NBC Sports
Miami is No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25, the first time the Hurricanes have topped the poll since the 2002 season ended in the national championship game. Miami received 40 of 70 first-place votes and leads BYU by 22 points.
The Hurricanes stayed unbeaten by beating rival Florida State in double overtime, while previous No. 1 Georgia lost at home to Auburn. BYU moved up to No. 2, its highest ranking since its 1984 title season, after beating Notre Dame 28-24 to improve to 6-0; the Cougars got 20 first-place votes.
Ohio State is third with nine first-place votes, followed by Notre Dame and Georgia. Miami is the first ACC team to be ranked No. 1 since Clemson in 2020.

4. Allen Ties Kelly's Bills TD Record in 33-30 Win
Source: Sportsnet
Josh Allen passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns and tied Hall of Famer Jim Kelly's franchise record with his 258th career TD pass as Buffalo held off the Las Vegas Raiders 33-30 on Sunday.
Allen reached the mark in the third quarter, escaping an almost certain sack and shot-putting a 12-yard pass to Keon Coleman. Bills fans, well over half the crowd at Allegiant Stadium, chanted "M-V-P!" James Cook rushed for a 3-yard score with 4:43 left and Tyler Bass added a 38-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining.
Kirk Cousins threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns for Las Vegas, including a 44-yarder to Tre Tucker with 1:32 left that cut the lead to three. Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected late in the first half for spitting at a Raiders player.

5. Sharangovich Wins It as Flames End Hurricanes' Seven-Game Streak
Source: Sportsnet
Yegor Sharangovich scored the game-winner at 15:32 of the third period as the Calgary Flames beat Carolina 3-2 on Sunday night, snapping the Hurricanes' seven-game winning streak.
Morgan Frost, who also scored, sent a saucer pass across the slot and Sharangovich one-timed it into the top corner. Matvei Gridin also scored for Calgary (2-6-0), which won at home for the first time in four games. Devin Cooley made 34 saves for his first win of the season.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jalen Chatfield scored for Carolina (7-2-1). Brandon Bussi stopped 31 shots for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

6. Einarson Captures Seventh Grand Slam Curling Title
Source: CBC
Canada's Kerri Einarson beat South Korea's Team Kang 6-3 on Sunday to win the women's final at the Co-op Invitational in Victoria, her seventh Grand Slam of Curling title and first since the 2024 Tour Challenge.
Einarson's new-look rink from Gimli, Man. — third Shannon Birchard, second Karlee Burgess and lead Jocelyn Peterman — never trailed. After Team Kang, skipped by Kim Kyeong-ae, tied it 2-2 in the third, Einarson made a runback for two in the fourth and added another deuce in the sixth.
In the men's final, world No. 1 Yannick Schwaller beat Norway's Magnus Ramsfjell 7-3, with Ramsfjell conceding after six ends. The next stop on the compressed Grand Slam tour is the Masters in Medicine Hat, Alta., from Nov. 3-8.

7. Caufield's OT Winner Lifts Canadiens Past Sabres
Source: Global News
Cole Caufield scored on a breakaway in overtime as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 at the Bell Centre on Saturday night — the second time in five days the teams went to overtime and Montreal won.
Caufield scored twice to reach four goals on the season. Nick Suzuki set up Bolduc's power-play goal with a point shot that was deflected in, and Juraj Slafkovsky's forecheck created Caufield's first goal. Oliver Kapanen made his season debut and looked comfortable alongside Kirby Dach.
Montreal sits near the bottom of the Atlantic Division but ranks fifth in the league in Corsi and has won the possession and expected-goals battle for most of the season. Goaltending has been the issue: the Canadiens are 29th of 32 teams in goals saved above expected.

8. Cowboys Off to Worst Start Since 2020 After Loss to Packers
Source: NBC News
The Dallas Cowboys fell to 2-4 with a 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, their worst record through six games since 2020.
Dallas has struggled to run the ball and its hoped-for defensive turnaround has not materialized, leaving the offense reliant on Dak Prescott. He attempted 54 passes and led a 13-play, 78-yard touchdown drive that cut the deficit to 10 with 44 seconds left, but earlier in the fourth quarter his fourth-down pass sailed out of the end zone.
The Cowboys ranked last in scoring defense last season and are second-to-last in yards allowed this season. Every team in the NFC East has a negative point differential, the only division in the league that can say that, leaving Dallas within reach of a playoff race.

9. Cardinals Stun Rams on 43-Yard Field Goal as Time Expires
Source: CBS Sports
Chad Ryland's 43-yard field goal as time expired gave the Arizona Cardinals an 18-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the biggest upset of the season. Arizona entered as a 13.5-point underdog; the result tied the largest upset in the past five years and was the largest upset loss of Matthew Stafford's career.
The Cardinals did not score a touchdown, getting six field goals. The Rams went ahead 16-15 with 47 seconds left on Stafford's 5-yard touchdown pass to Colby Parkinson, but kicker Blake Grupe had been hurt making a tackle, so punter Ethan Evans made the extra point.
Jacoby Brissett found Jalen Brooks for 21 yards on the first play of the final drive, and a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on Josh Wallace helped set up the kick. The Rams fell to 2-4.

10. Gardner-Johnson Ejected for Spitting at Bowers
Source: SB Nation
Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct after spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers during Sunday's game.
The two had been jawing after a play, and Gardner-Johnson spit in Bowers' direction as he headed back to the huddle. It is not the first such incident for Gardner-Johnson, who has been fined repeatedly for dirty hits and was ejected in 2024 with the Philadelphia Eagles after two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Last season, Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting at Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
The Bills won 33-30 to improve to 5-1. "I gotta be a better player. I gotta be a better vet. I let my emotions get above, and I hurt my team. I gotta do better," Gardner-Johnson said afterward. Referees confirmed the reason for the ejection in the pool report.
