The Republic of Ireland beat Israel 3-0 in a UEFA Nations League match in Hungary on Sunday, after gestures that drew international attention. Ireland's players wore black armbands in support of Palestinians killed in the conflict in Gaza, bowed their heads during Israel's anthem and refused pre-match handshakes, while captain Dara O'Shea pledged to donate all his match earnings to aid Gaza.

On Saturday, Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell said the players would wear black armbands "in recognition of all lives lost in the conflict," confirming the match would go ahead after hours of talks and a team vote. American Brandon McNulty surprised the field to win the men's elite road race on the final day of the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal. The 28-year-old attacked with 33 kilometres to go and never gave up the lead, finishing in six hours, 17 minutes and four seconds, becoming the first American to win the elite road race title since Lance Armstrong in Oslo in 1993.

McNulty said he could not believe it until the final 300 metres. Australia's Michael Matthews took silver in 6:17:17, with the Netherlands' van der Poel earning bronze. With two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar absent while recovering from a crash last month, the 273.4-km race, run over 12 laps of a 13.4-km circuit, was wide open.

Canada's top finisher was Michael Leonard of Oakville, Ont., 32nd in 6:23:43. Michael Woods of Toronto was 35th in 6:23:52 in the final race of his career. Armstrong congratulated McNulty on social media.

6. Commanders Upset Champion Seahawks 33-31

The Washington Commanders beat the defending champion Seattle Seahawks 33-31 on Sunday, with Marcus Mariota again proving a thorn in Seattle's side. He is now 3-0 lifetime as a starter against the Seahawks, with earlier wins as a member of the Titans and Falcons, and Commanders coach Dan Quinn also got the better of his former team.

Seattle's three turnovers led to 21 Washington points. Quarterback Sam Darnold threw four touchdown passes but also had a costly pick-six that put the Seahawks down nine late in the fourth quarter. Seattle's 12-game winning streak is over, and the team is now 2-1.

Las Vegas Aces center A'ja Wilson won the AP's WNBA Player of the Year award for an unprecedented third straight year, receiving 15 of 17 first-place votes from a national media panel on Sunday. She topped Minnesota's Olivia Miles along with Indiana's Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. It is Wilson's fourth time winning the award, breaking a tie with Breanna Stewart for the most since it was first given in 2016.

Wilson again led the league in scoring at 26.2 points while shooting nearly 53% from the field, adding 9.4 rebounds, a career-best 3.2 assists and 1.9 blocks. Atlanta's Angel Reese dethroned Wilson as AP Defensive Player of the Year; she was third in the league in steals and led the league in rebounds for a third straight season.

8. Mariners' Dan Wilson Won't Return as Manager in 2027

Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson told players and staff on Sunday morning that he will not return in 2027, ahead of the team's final game of a disappointing season. The message came in a pregame meeting before the Mariners' 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels in Game 162, and Wilson confirmed the change afterward. Coaching-staff turnover is also expected, though pitching-strategy director Trent Blank and pitching coach Pete Woodworth will return, each under contract for two more seasons.

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander are expected back in 2027, and Dipoto will hold a press conference Monday. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has a Grade 2 hamstring strain that could keep him out three to four weeks, according to an ESPN report. That is on the short end of the usual three-to-eight-week window for such an injury. The Bears had kept the specific degree of the strain secret for six days, after early optimism that an MRI would show a Grade 1 injury.

Williams has already been ruled out for Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
