Toronto police say they were called at about 9:21 p.m. on Sept. 25 for a shooting in the area of Neilson Road and Wickson Trail, north of Sheppard Avenue East in Scarborough. Officers arrived to find an adult male victim with gunshot injuries.

Toronto paramedics say the man was taken to hospital with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries. Police say they do not have a description of the suspect, and the circumstances that led to the shooting are under investigation.

2. Man stabbed in Willowdale taken to hospital

Toronto police are investigating a stabbing in Willowdale that left one man injured. Police say they received a call at 9:13 p.m. on Sept. 25 for a stabbing in the area of Yonge Street and McKeen Avenue, south of Finch Avenue.

Officers located an adult male victim who had been stabbed, police say. He was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say they do not have a suspect description, and what led to the stabbing is under investigation.

3. Brampton family fears for elderly mother after $20K jewelry theft

A Brampton man says thieves stole about $20,000 worth of jewelry from his 78-year-old mother while she was out for an evening walk in her neighbourhood. Raghavendra Kumar told CTV News the theft happened just before 6 p.m. on July 28 on a residential street near Chinguacousy Road and Bovaird Drive West.

Kumar said his mother, who does not speak English well, initially believed the woman who approached her was a neighbour. He says the woman bent down and touched his mother’s feet before hugging her to gain her trust, then placed a fake piece of jewelry around her neck while removing her real gold necklace. The suspects also allegedly took her gold bangles before leaving in an SUV.

Kumar estimates about 110 grams of jewelry worth roughly $20,000 in raw metal value were stolen, and says the pieces were made by his father, a goldsmith, and gifted when his parents married in 1971. Peel police say they have identified a white Chevrolet Equinox as a vehicle of interest and consider the woman seen in the video a person of interest; the July 28 incident remains under investigation. Kumar says his mother was “shivering” and could not walk when she realized what had happened, and has since stopped going for walks outside. 4. Tenants in one Toronto building declare rent strike victory as another strike begins

Tenants at a west-end Toronto apartment building have ended their months-long rent strike after they say the landlord withdrew an attempt to retroactively increase rents by more than five per cent. Luz Flores, a tenant of 75 Spencer Avenue in Parkdale, said in a statement Thursday evening that “we won because we stayed strong and united.”

Tenants in more than 30 units began withholding rent in March after the property management company, MetCap Living, applied for an above guideline rent increase. The Parkdale tenants said their rents would have gone up by 5.4 per cent if the application had been approved.

The news came as another rent strike began on Sept. 1 at 2293 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough, where about a dozen families stopped paying rent to pressure their landlord to withdraw back-to-back AGI applications for 2025 and this year. Tenant Jennie Ernewein, a single parent and social worker, says her rent has risen from $1,700 to more than $1,850 since she moved in five years ago and she fears being priced out of her home. The company managing the building said only 10 of its 118 units have outstanding rent, and that it has invested more than $3.3 million in improvements since acquiring the building in 2023.

5. Man accused of stealing guns from woman he met on online dating platform: Peel police

Peel Regional Police say a man is facing charges after he allegedly deceived a Brampton woman through an online dating platform and stole her guns. Police say the woman reported the incident earlier this month, saying she met a man online and communicated with him over several weeks.

Investigators allege the man stole the keys to her home and gun locker, then went to her home and took off with two lawfully owned guns as well as ammunition. Police identified the suspect as Jason Randolph Blake Bowden, 42, of no fixed address, a man they say is wanted by several police services and has an extensive criminal history spanning nearly two decades.

He was arrested on Sept. 8 and charged with multiple offences, including possession of a weapon obtained by crime, and is being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing. The charges have not been tested in court. Police say officers recovered the stolen guns and ammunition, fraudulent identification documents and bank cards bearing names believed to be his aliases, and that he is believed to have used at least 10 aliases.

6. Blue Jays all-star Guerrero apologizes for comments about $500M contract

Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. apologized to fans and teammates on Friday for comments he made earlier this week about the 14-year, $500-million contract extension he signed in 2025. “The main reason I’m here is because I regret my comments the other day,” Guerrero told reporters through an interpreter. “I really feel that everyone, my fans, everyone deserves an apology from me.”

Guerrero had previously said the massive contract was for what he had already done with the Blue Jays rather than what he would do for the team in the future, and doubled down on those comments in Baltimore after his team was eliminated from the playoffs. On Friday he said he did not want to make excuses, adding that he is very disappointed about his year. He noted that even his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr., told him his comments were a mistake.

The all-star struggled offensively this season, hitting only nine home runs and just one at Rogers Centre as of Friday. The Blue Jays are last in the American League East with three games left in the regular season. Manager John Schneider said what was said was probably taken out of context a little bit, and that he believes Guerrero is focused on making this contract a good one.

Prince Harry says he loves every single thing about Canada and that the country plays an incredibly important role when it comes to moral leadership in today’s world. The Duke of Sussex made the comment in an exclusive interview with CTV News on Friday, shortly after parachuting from a plane north of Toronto to raise money for two veterans charities and to make good on a promise he made to a 102-year-old former paratrooper last year.

The trip traces back to last November, when the Duke met Second World War veteran Ed Marshall at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre in Toronto. Marshall told him about a fundraising skydive he did for his 100th birthday in 2024, and Prince Harry promised to return to the Toronto area to accompany him on another jump. On Friday he did exactly that; Marshall, who turns 103 in a few months, was unable to dive himself amid concerns from his doctor, so his grandson took his place while he watched from the back of the plane.

The skydive raised funds for Sunnybrook Veterans Centre and the True Patriot Love Foundation. Prince Harry said he is not in the business of letting people down, adding that you cannot let a 102-year-old veteran down. He was seen kissing the ground after landing in an open field in Innisfil, Ontario, and said his wife was very relieved once he was back on the ground. Asked about the family’s recent return to the United Kingdom, he said he had lots of reasons but did not elaborate. Prince Harry has said his wife lived in Canada for seven years, and that Canada has a very special place in his heart.

8. Here's when you can get your flu shot in Ontario

Ontario is launching its fall immunization program ahead of flu season, and some people can get their shots as early as next week. The Ministry of Health says an initial supply of COVID-19 and flu vaccines will be available for high-risk and priority groups who live, work or study in Ontario starting Monday.

Free flu and COVID-19 shots will be available more widely to the general public starting Oct. 26 at participating pharmacies, public health units, and participating doctor and nurse practitioner offices. “As respiratory illness season approaches, our government is continuing to take action to protect our families and communities,” Health Minister Sylvia Jones said in a statement.

The province says residents aged 60 to 74 who meet certain high-risk criteria or live in specific higher-risk settings, as well as those 75 and older, are eligible for RSV vaccines. Starting Oct. 1, eligible newborns and infants up to eight months of age in their first RSV season, and high-risk children up to 24 months in their second RSV season, can get the shot, and pregnant women may also get the RSV vaccine if they wish. Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore encouraged the most vulnerable to protect themselves.

9. Canada's Jewish communities on edge following shooting outside Ontario synagogue

Jewish communities across Canada are on edge after a gunman opened fire outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ont., during Yom Kippur services on Sunday. Armed police exchanged gunfire with the shooter, who was killed; one officer remains in hospital.

Rabbi Debra Landsberg, of Temple Emanu-El in Toronto, says that when she first came to Canada 25 years ago the doors of her synagogue were open and unlocked, but now security guards check worshippers’ bags and patrol the building. In March, roughly 20 shots were fired at Temple Emanu-El after Purim services had ended; no one was physically hurt.

At Beth Jacob Synagogue in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Sukkot services have been moved to a private home, a decision congregation president Tova Arbus said took on greater significance because the Belleville congregation is a similar size in another small, close-knit town. In Montreal, Rabbi Adam Scheier of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim said the shooting has reinforced his synagogue’s approach to security, and noted that in Quebec off-duty police officers hired as private security cannot be armed. The report also notes that increased security comes at a cost, with many organizations having to cut positions or programming to pay for it.

10. Canadian charged with voting fraud in the U.S. for casting ballot in 3 elections

A Canadian has been charged in the United States with three counts of voter fraud for casting ballots in three elections without being a U.S. citizen. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Florida says Christiane Vinette Young voted in the 2024 and 2022 general elections and the 2022 primary elections, despite knowing she was not a U.S. citizen.

The office says the 75-year-old was illegally present in the United States when she voted, and that she faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison if convicted. Vinette Young did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office says the case was investigated by Homeland Security and that she is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
