1. Tencent unveils Hunyuan Hy4 preview: a 770B-parameter open-source flagship

On August 28, Tencent Hunyuan released its new flagship model, Hy4 preview, with 770 billion total parameters, 49 billion active parameters, and a 1-million-token context length. The model is now open-sourced and available on Tencent Cloud TokenHub and OpenRouter, and can be tried in products like WorkBuddy, CodeBuddy, Yuanbao, and ima.
Pricing is set per million tokens: 0.3 yuan for cached input, 6 yuan for standard input, and 18 yuan for output. Tencent Hunyuan said the model was significantly scaled up in size, context length, and data, and that joint gains in pre-training and post-training put it in the top tier of open-source models.
To verify real-world engineering performance, Tencent Hunyuan ran a blind test with 163 internal experts across 203 engineering tasks. Hy4 preview averaged 2.99 out of 4.00, slightly ahead of GLM-5.3 (2.92) and Kimi K3 (2.94). The model was also co-built with experts in software engineering, gaming, finance, and security.

2. Google, Microsoft and 100 companies warn of coming AI cyberattacks

BBC reported on August 28 that 100 companies, including Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI, jointly signed an open letter urging countries and organizations to strengthen their cyber defenses before AI becomes powerful enough to break through existing protections.
The letter opens by stating that "our window to strengthen cyber defenses is limited," and warns that as AI advances rapidly, AI-driven cyberattacks will become more common and complex within months, with current security measures "insufficient."
As background, OpenAI's recent incident report described nearly 700 test AI agents building a secret message board, communicating and coordinating to attack the code platform Hugging Face — described as the world's first AI-based cyberattack. Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton told the BBC on the 27th that if AI becomes "smarter" than humans, society could be "in real trouble."
3. Weibo confirms AI-fabricated chat records; rumor account permanently closed

On August 28, Weibo issued an official statement clarifying that the so-called chat records between Justin Sun and Eileen Gu were entirely fabricated rumors, and that the malicious content has been fully removed.
Zeng Ying, Sun's ex-girlfriend, publicly clarified that she never posted any nude photos related to the pair, and that the circulated chat records were AI-generated fake content. She added that the offending account followed only one person and posted only this one item, yet was mysteriously pushed to eighth on the hot-search list, suggesting a paid-traffic black operation.
Weibo's community account "Weiboxia" then issued a notice confirming the user fabricated false content via AI tools and infringed on multiple public figures, and permanently closed the account.

4. CXMT adopts high-k metal gate technology toward 1a-class DRAM nodes

Chinese DRAM maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has introduced high-k metal gate (HKMG) technology into its DRAM transistors, a material and device-level upgrade expected to ease leakage from process shrinking and pave the way to more advanced 1a-class DRAM nodes.
As DRAM devices shrink, traditional silicon dioxide insulators become too thin and electrons can tunnel through, causing leakage. CXMT is replacing the silicon-based insulator with high-k materials such as hafnium oxide, and swapping polysilicon gates for custom metal gate stacks to cut leakage, improve power consumption, and speed up switching.
According to market reports, the technology is being applied to G4-generation DRAM and LPDDR5X products. CXMT is also expanding capacity, with current monthly output of about 200,000 wafers targeted to reach 300,000 per month by year-end.

5. Hygon launches open computing architecture turning compute directly into tokens

Hygon Information has launched its "Agent to Token" open computing architecture, using CPU and DCU dual-chip collaboration with open interconnect to provide a new computing framework from chip to application for the token economy.
Under the architecture, the Hygon CPU serves as the system hub for agent workflows, covering data preprocessing, task orchestration, memory hierarchy, and vector database retrieval; the DCU focuses on parallel computing acceleration for token generation, handling batch decoding, KV-cache optimization, and long-sequence support.
The architecture is open across four dimensions — computing, interconnect, security, and software stack — with interconnect openness built on Hygon's self-developed HSL protocol to break bandwidth bottlenecks.

6. Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro specs leak across Xuanjie and Qualcomm platforms

A blogger leaked core specs for Xiaomi's Pad 9 Pro series: the Pad 9 Pro will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 platform, while the Pad 9 Pro Max debuts Xiaomi's in-house Xuanjie O3 chip, continuing the dual-chip strategy.
The Xuanjie O3 uses a 10-core all-big-core design with six super-large and four large cores, topping out at 4.35 GHz. It scores 15,221 in GeekBench 6 multi-core (up 60% from the previous generation), debuts the G2-Ultra NX GPU with graphics performance up 85% and ray tracing up 182%, and hits 5,228,014 in AnTuTu — the first mobile flagship platform to break 5 million.
The Pad 9 Pro also features a 12.5-inch 3.2K 144Hz LCD, an 11,000mAh battery, and 67W fast charging. The devices are expected to launch in September.

7. World's first 1100Hz monitor arrives: under 1ms per frame

Samsung unveiled the Odyssey G6 G60H gaming monitor at Gamescom 2026, breaking 1100Hz to become the world's first gaming monitor at that refresh rate.
The monitor is not OLED; it uses a 27-inch Fast IPS panel with native QHD resolution (2560×1440) and a native refresh rate of up to 600Hz. When switched to high-definition resolution, the refresh rate soars to 1100Hz with under 0.91ms per frame, a 1ms GTG response time, and DisplayPort 2.1 plus HDMI 2.1.
Since no consumer GPU can currently satisfy 1100Hz output, the rate is largely a technology showcase. Samsung said the Odyssey G6 will launch globally in the second half of 2026, and also unveiled the 49-inch OLED G9, 42-inch curved OLED G7, and 32-inch OLED G8.

8. Huawei's Xu Zhijun: HarmonyOS to top 100 million users by year-end

At HarmonyOS Ecosystem Conference 2026, Huawei's rotating chairman Xu Zhijun announced the latest progress: native HarmonyOS apps have surpassed 100,000, with more than 400,000 apps directly accessible on HarmonyOS phones.
Xu said that as of August 20, devices running HarmonyOS 6 have exceeded 80 million units, and at the current weekly growth rate the ecosystem is expected to cross 100 million users in the fourth quarter, leaving the incubation phase.

9. Time calls her the "chip queen": Huawei's He Tingbo makes AI 100 list

Time magazine named Huawei's He Tingbo to its 2026 list of the 100 most influential people in AI, in the leaders category. Time called her China's "chip queen" and a central figure in Huawei's effort to break free from dependence on American chips.
Time wrote that on May 17, 2019, when the US put Huawei on the Entity List, He Tingbo sent an internal letter to HiSilicon employees, and the backup chips secretly developed over years were activated overnight. She has led Huawei's chip R&D since 2003, and the company's chip portfolio now spans Kirin, Ascend, Kunpeng, and 5G chips.
In May, He Tingbo introduced "Tao's Law" at IEEE ISCAS 2026 in Shanghai, shifting the focus from geometric scaling to system-level efficiency. She told Time: "We believe openness and cooperation are key to the continued progress of the semiconductor industry."

10. Deepest partial lunar eclipse until 2028: 96.2% of moon enters Earth's shadow

On the night of August 27-28, a deep partial lunar eclipse unfolded. At maximum eclipse, 96.2% of the moon slipped into Earth's umbra, with most of the moon taking on a rusty red hue and only a thin sliver remaining brightly lit — the deepest partial lunar eclipse visible on Earth until December 31, 2028.
According to Space.com's live coverage, at 1:51 a.m. EDT the last of the moon emerged from Earth's umbral shadow, closing more than three hours of the partial phase; at 3:01 a.m. EDT the moon left the penumbral shadow entirely, officially ending the eclipse.
At peak, photographers captured the colossal curve of Earth's silhouette advancing across and retreating from the lunar disk, with skywatchers worldwide sharing their observations and images.
