Australian officials say a vehicle drove into a crowd standing on a road to cheer on the Newcastle Knights rugby team north of Sydney on Saturday, injuring 10 people, including several children.
Two of the injured — a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man — were in critical condition, while the other eight were in stable condition at a hospital, according to New South Wales police. Those in stable condition included another 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl. Police said they arrested the 18-year-old male driver and were investigating what happened, adding the crash was not believed to be related to terrorism.
According to the Australian Associated Press, thousands had been cheering the team on this week as they trained. Another large crowd was on the street Saturday morning to see the team bus off ahead of the rugby league finals match on Sunday.

2. 49ers Owner Jed York Suspended Six Games, Fined $500,000 by NFL
Source: NBC News
The NFL announced Friday that San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has been suspended for six regular-season games and fined $500,000 for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
The penalties came two months after York was arrested Aug. 23 in Ohio on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. He later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. The league said York had stayed away from the 49ers' first three regular-season games, as well as from NFL meetings, during its investigation; those three missed games count toward his suspension, and he may return on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
After the announcement, York released a statement through the 49ers apologizing to "my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners," saying "this was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility." York, 46, was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, and was arrested about 20 miles south of his hometown in East Palestine, Ohio, where police were conducting a prostitution sting at a mobile home park.

3. Shohei Ohtani Admits He Won't Be Fully Healthy in the Playoffs
Source: New York Post
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday, on the eve of the National League Division Series, that the team has plenty of hope but few precise expectations when it comes to Shohei Ohtani's health, acknowledging he was "not so sure" what the slugger would be able to provide.
Ohtani, whose second half was marred by right arm and left knee injuries, went on the injured list in mid-September. Speaking to reporters Friday for the first time since then, he said in Japanese that his ailments had "gotten much better" and that the past few days had been "productive" for his previously slumping swing, adding, "I think my swing has gotten better."
Roberts reiterated that the four-time MVP is "not 100%," following an 11-for-70 slump over his final 18 games of the regular season — the last five of which came after he returned from the IL last week. Ohtani has already been robbed of his two-way role this October, limited to hitting-only duties since early July. He also revealed that during his stint on the injured list he avoided holding his young daughter with his aching right arm, saying, "I was able to hold my daughter using my left arm." Game 1 of the NLDS begins Saturday afternoon.

4. Valkyries Erase 16-Point Deficit, Reach First WNBA Semifinals
Source: Fox News
The Golden State Valkyries rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the Dallas Wings 77-73 on Friday night in a dramatic, winner-take-all Game 3, securing the first playoff series victory in franchise history and a spot in the WNBA semifinals.
Forward Gabby Williams scored 19 points and hit a go-ahead basket late in the fourth quarter. The WNBA expansion franchise's second season has brought historic success on and off the court.
In 2025, the Valkyries became the first expansion franchise in league history to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season. They also sold out every regular-season home game and set a league attendance record, averaging more than 18,000 fans per contest, and received the league's highest valuation from Forbes.

5. Virginia Tech's Last-Second Kick Misses, Pitt Survives 35-33
Source: theScore (AP)
In Blacksburg, Va., Virginia Tech's John Love missed a 36-yard field goal as time expired, and Pittsburgh survived for a 35-33 victory — becoming the first team to reach five wins this season.
Pitt quarterback Holden Geriner came off the bench to throw a touchdown pass, and Ja'Kyrian Turner added a rushing touchdown for the Panthers (5-0, 2-0 ACC), who remain one of three unbeaten teams in the ACC. Pitt trailed 14-0 but scored 21 unanswered points to come back, and held on despite losing starting quarterback Mason Heintschel to an injury on the fourth play of the second half.
Virginia Tech (4-1, 1-1) controlled much of the first half but committed four turnovers, which Pitt turned into 14 points. Grunkemeyer threw for a career-high 434 yards for the Hokies, who outgained Pitt 499-295 but fell short. "I hope the country will respect the Panthers now," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. Virginia Tech coach James Franklin said everyone would focus on the last play, but that the tape would show 20 plays the Hokies could have made to avoid that situation.

6. Redblacks Fall to Tiger-Cats for 21st Straight Loss, a Modern CFL Record
Source: Sportsnet
Kenny Lawler caught six passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns to help the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-11) snap a five-game losing skid with a 34-16 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night.
The loss was Ottawa's 21st in a row dating back to last season, a modern-day CFL record. It also put the Redblacks in the record book for the worst start to a CFL season, overtaking the Shreveport Pirates' 0-14 start to the 1994 campaign. Hamilton trailed 16-13 at the half but scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second half, with quarterback Harrison Frost going 28-for-35 for 342 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Ottawa's offence was ineffective in the second half, managing just six offensive plays and no first downs in the third quarter. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie admitted he didn't call the best game in the second half and apologized to fans: "I know they probably want me out the door and I don't blame them. We haven't won a game. I apologize to those guys. I haven't done a good enough job." Lawler also hauled in his 400th CFL career reception, and afterward shared a moment at centre field with his younger brother Kenzel, a Redblacks defensive back, swapping jerseys before the two hugged and went their separate ways. Ottawa has three games remaining.

7. Panthers Captain Barkov Leaves Game With Left-Leg Injury
Source: Daily Faceoff
Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov left Thursday night's game against the San Jose Sharks with an injury to his left leg, casting a shadow over the team's new season.
Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season with a torn right ACL and MCL, and had worked his way back to a strong return this year — only to be hurt again just two games in. "It's hard to watch. Barkov is just internationally loved," former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton said on Daily Faceoff Live.
Hutton said health is never guaranteed in a sport like hockey, noting the Panthers were badly injured last season and that Barkov is one of those "irreplaceable" players who sets the tone and plays the tough minutes against the best opponents. According to the show, Barkov was preparing for an MRI, and the hope is that the injury is only short-term.

8. Manchester City Lodges 'Comprehensive' Appeal After Financial Rule-Breaking Verdict
Source: CBC
Manchester City confirmed Friday that it has lodged a "comprehensive" appeal against an independent commission's ruling that found the club guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules. "The club's firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe," read a short statement from City.
The case dates back to 2018 and reached a milestone Tuesday, when the Premier League published a verdict saying the Abu Dhabi-controlled club was "guilty of all charges related to serious breaches" of the competition's financial rules from 2009-18. City has yet to receive a punishment; potential sanctions could include a reprimand, fine, points deduction or, in the worst case, expulsion from the competition — though no team has ever been expelled from English soccer's top flight.
The appeal was filed Thursday evening, ahead of Friday's deadline. According to the Premier League, the three-person investigatory panel found that City artificially inflated its revenue — through what the league called "sham" commercial deals — by more than $1 billion US from 2009-18 to circumvent financial fair-play rules that restricted rival clubs, the foundation of a run that brought eight league titles from 2012-24. The league said the appeal hearing should take place within 12 weeks and cannot exceed five consecutive days; any punishments will be addressed in a separate, confidential hearing.

9. PWHL Sets Eastern and Western Conferences, Expands to Eight-Team Playoffs
Source: Sportsnet
The Professional Women's Hockey League announced Friday that it will adopt a new conference structure and an expanded playoff format for the upcoming season. With four expansion teams set to hit the ice, the 12-team league released a Dec. 5-April 18 regular-season schedule that includes a three-round post-season.
Eastern Conference teams include the Boston Fleet, PWHL Hamilton, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres. Western Conference clubs include PWHL Detroit, PWHL Las Vegas, Minnesota Frost, PWHL San Jose, Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes. Each team will play 30 regular-season games, including 18 within its conference and 12 interconference games; expansion team names are expected to be announced next month.
The top four teams in each conference will qualify for the playoffs: best-of-three first-round series will be followed by best-of-five conference finals and a best-of-five league final for the Walter Cup. The two first-place teams will be able to select their first-round opponents (the third- or fourth-place teams in their conference). The PWHL will also make its debut on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada this fall and will host its inaugural All-Star event in Toronto in March. All 180 regular-season games will be available to an international audience on the PWHL's YouTube channel and website.

10. Caitlin Clark Revealed as College GameDay Guest Picker for Ohio State-Iowa
Source: Bleacher Report
Indiana Fever star and former Iowa Hawkeye Caitlin Clark will be College GameDay's guest picker on Saturday when ESPN's college football pregame show rolls into Iowa City for No. 14 Iowa's home game against No. 5 Ohio State.
Clark became a superstar at Iowa, leading the Hawkeyes to back-to-back national championship game appearances. She is a three-time first-team Associated Press All-American (2022-2024) and a two-time consensus national player of the year (2023-2024), and she is the all-time Division I scoring leader — men or women — with 3,951 points.
She just finished her third season with the Fever, who went 28-16 but fell short in the first round of the playoffs to the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Clark had her best pro season, averaging 22.3 points (third in the WNBA) and 8.3 assists (second). College GameDay is in Iowa City for the first time since 2006; the 4-0 Hawkeyes enter after beating Michigan on the road 20-19. Clark and the GameDay crew will make their picks just before the show closes at noon ET, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
