1. Search continues for missing Ontario air ambulance after debris found

The U.S. Coast Guard continued searching Sunday for six people aboard an Ontario-based air ambulance that went missing over the Atlantic. The Gulfstream G100, operated by Hamilton, Ont.-based Latitude Air Ambulance, disappeared early Saturday while flying from Bermuda to Boston with four Canadians and two Bermuda nationals on board.

The Coast Guard said it has searched about 2,840 square miles (roughly 7,355 square kilometres) and confirmed that a debris field found over the weekend belongs to the aircraft. Rear-Adm. Matthew W. Lake said the search has gone on for about 53 hours, that the debris field measures about 80 to 90 feet, and that the search area is 'large and demanding.' Fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, boats and cutters are involved, alongside the New York National Guard's Air Rescue Wing and Massachusetts authorities.

According to Latitude Air Ambulance operations manager Clarence Togeretz, those on board included a patient and a family member, both Bermuda nationals, plus two pilots and two medical staff. The aircraft departed Bermuda's L.F. Wade International Airport at 12:41 a.m. Saturday and lost contact with the company around 1:30 a.m.; flight-tracking data showed it dropped from 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet in about two minutes. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said Transport Canada is closely monitoring the search.

2. Man found dead after 'disturbance' at North York home, homicide squad investigating

Toronto police say a man was found dead after a 'disturbance' inside a North York residence Sunday morning. Officers were called to the fourth floor of an apartment building in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood, near Lawrence Avenue West and Blossomfield Drive, just west of William R. Allen Road, at about 8:20 a.m.

Det. Sgt. Sanjeev Nair of the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit said officers found a male with traumatic injuries inside a unit, and it is not believed he lived there. The victim was a man in his early 30s; an autopsy is expected Monday. Nair said several people, including the suspect, fled the unit northbound before police arrived. No suspect description is available yet, but investigators are reviewing video footage and it is 'only going to be a matter of time before we have a good image of the suspect.'

Local Coun. Mike Colle said the community is 'disgusted and distraught.' He said it was a shooting, though investigators have not confirmed a firearm was involved. Noting that a mini-police station opened in the area six months ago and that crime had dropped dramatically over five years, he said 'this shatters all the good work.' He called for tougher penalties, arguing for no bail for gun crimes and a minimum of 20 years for killings with a gun.

6. Man killed after falling onto metro tracks in Montreal

The Montreal transit authority (STM) confirmed Sunday that a man who fell onto the tracks at a metro station has died after being struck by an oncoming train. The STM said medical services responded to Lionel-Groulx on Saturday at around 10 a.m. after a man in his 40s fell onto the tracks.

'The train was unable to come to a stop before the person made it back to the platform,' STM spokesperson Renaud Martel-Theoret said. Urgences-Sante spokesperson Julie Gaulin said: 'At arrival he was in critical condition. We didn't transport to the hospital.' Montreal police confirmed the man's age and said the death appeared accidental; a surveillance camera video showed the man was not pushed and there was no criminal element.

The STM offered condolences to the victim's family, saying 'our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,' and said it will continue investigating. The STM is reminding passengers not to stand too close to the platform edge and to stay behind the yellow lines.

8. Hyundai recalls more than 1,400 Ioniq 9 SUVs in Canada

Hyundai is recalling more than 1,400 Ioniq 9 SUVs in Canada over a potential problem with the vehicles' second-row power seats. The recall affects certain 2026 and 2027 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Ultimate Calligraphy models equipped with second-row captain chairs, according to a Transport Canada notice updated Thursday; 1,460 vehicles are affected.

The issue involves the seats' power-folding function. In some vehicles, the second-row seats may fail to detect an obstruction and could keep moving after contacting something in their path, increasing the risk of injury. As a precaution, Hyundai advises owners to make sure the second-row seats are empty before using the power-folding functions until the repair is done.

Hyundai will notify affected owners in writing and provide a software update for the rear power seats, delivered wirelessly to eligible vehicles or arranged at a dealership at no charge. Owners can check whether their vehicle is affected by entering its VIN into Hyundai Canada's recall lookup tool. A similar recall was issued in the United States for certain 2026 Ioniq 9 vehicles, affecting 5,360 vehicles.

9. Meryl Streep's Aslan stirs gender debate over Gerwig's 'Narnia'

Not a single frame has been released from director Greta Gerwig's adaptation of the classic children's book series 'The Chronicles of Narnia,' yet one casting decision is already drawing outrage from many conservative Christian commentators. Oscar winner Meryl Streep will voice Aslan the lion in 'Narnia: The Magician's Nephew.'

In the seven Narnia books by British Christian author C.S. Lewis, published in the 1950s, Aslan is seen as a literary representation of Jesus Christ, and the lion is depicted as male. Commentator Seth Udinsky wrote in the Christian Post that this is a 'well-known ploy' to 'subvert and destroy symbols of Christianity.' Gerwig herself is resetting 'The Magician's Nephew' from around 1900 to the 1950s.

Some Lewis scholars and aficionados are taking a wait-and-see approach. Kat Coffin, a New York-based writer and Lewis scholar, said she has questions about the casting but is 'far more disturbed by the people who are violently opposed' to any hint that God's incarnation could be feminine. Gerwig said she saw Streep as one of the few actors who could meet her criteria for Aslan's voice. The Netflix production is scheduled for theatrical release in February.

10. Fans ask why Marvel's cutbacks seem to hit Black heroes

Actor Mahershala Ali is starring in the new action thriller 'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,' but he keeps being asked about a different movie: a reboot of the 1998 hit 'Blade.' The long-anticipated project would have brought the vampire-slaying antihero, with Ali in the role, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the actor recently told GQ he has moved on.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said he feels like a 'gigantic loser and failure that we didn't get off the ground with Mahershala.' Ali replied: 'He should feel that way.' The 'Blade' project, widely viewed as effectively abandoned, joins a list of stalled or scrapped Marvel titles, including the Disney+ series 'Wonder Man,' that feature Black protagonists.

As planned series and movies fall by the wayside, Black fans are asking whether the MCU is purposely neglecting and sidelining its Black characters. 'All the Black-led shows seem to have a harder road to get either made or publicized or treated in the same fashion as other properties,' said Carl Waldron, a longtime Marvel fan who writes about Black superheroes on his website Super. Black. The 2018 film 'Black Panther' broke box-office records, and its 2022 sequel grossed more than $859 million worldwide.
