Kroenke Sports & Entertainment announced Tuesday that it has reached a deal to buy controlling ownership of the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, with the transaction expected to close in early 2027. The Athletic reported the deal is being done at a $4-billion valuation, a record for an MLB team.

Stan Kroenke's company already owns the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, Premier League champion Arsenal, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and MLS's Colorado Rapids. Moreno will remain a minority owner, and the sale also includes the team's regional television network and radio station.

Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout called the deal "just a fresh start," saying he has "no hard feelings against Arte" but is "super excited." At 53-85, the Angels are headed for their 11th consecutive losing season. Trout said he intends to play out the remaining four years of the $426.5-million contract he signed with Moreno in 2019.

Court documents released Tuesday showed Tiger Woods plans to change his not guilty plea in a DUI case stemming from a rollover crash in Florida. In March, Woods' Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled onto its side, and the golfer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Woods is expected in court Wednesday morning for a plea conference, though no details of the plea change were released. An incident report said he was driving at high speed on a Jupiter Island residential road with a 30 mph limit, causing $5,000 in damage to the truck.

Woods crawled out without injuries and told a deputy he was looking down at his phone and changing the radio. A breathalyzer showed no alcohol, but he refused a urine test, and deputies found two pain pills in his pocket. Premier League clubs set a single-window spending record this summer, surpassing $4.3 billion. Before Tuesday's deadline, Manchester City was about to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £125 million (US$169 million), making the Argentina star one of the most expensive players in history.

According to Transfermarkt, City's spending on new players could top $600 million this window, including Senegal winger Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for $81 million. Chelsea and Tottenham each spent more than $400 million.

4. Tony Romo Pleads No Contest to OWI, Apologizes

CBS lead NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has pleaded no contest to a charge of operating while intoxicated and apologized for the actions that led to his July arrest. Romo was arrested July 23 during a traffic stop on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin, and CBS has placed him on leave.

Milwaukee County court records show Romo lost his driving privileges for six months and must complete an alcohol assessment program, along with $834 in costs. An interlock device must be installed on his vehicles for at least one year after he is licensed.

In a statement, Romo said multiple back surgeries left him with constant pain that "led to a dependence on pain medication," and efforts to get off the medications "led to an over-reliance on alcohol." He stressed, "None of this is an excuse." JJ Watt will fill his role during his absence.

5. Predators Trade Evangelista to Devils

The Nashville Predators traded forward Luke Evangelista to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday for a conditional first-round pick and a second-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft. The first-rounder was previously acquired from the Calgary Flames in the Simon Nemec deal on June 23.

The 24-year-old Evangelista had an NHL career-high 56 points (12 goals, 44 assists) in 81 games last season. He is entering the second season of a two-year, $6 million contract he signed Oct. 4, 2025, and can become a restricted free agent after the season.

Predators general manager Chris MacFarland said the trade brings "two more high draft picks" and salary-cap flexibility. Selected in the second round (No. 42) of the 2020 draft, Evangelista has 142 points (45 goals, 97 assists) in 253 regular-season games.

6. Conners, Taylor Named to Presidents Cup International Team

Juventus officially sent Canada international Jonathan David to Atletico Madrid on a free loan, with an option to buy for €25 million at the end of the season. It is a free loan, so the Spanish club will only cover his wages, with the fee payable over four instalments.

The 26-year-old, who joined Juventus as a free agent last summer, struggled to adapt to Serie A, scoring eight goals with five assists in 47 appearances. He was jeered by home fans in his last appearance for the club.

8. Ducks to Retire Ryan Getzlaf's No. 15

The Anaheim Ducks announced Tuesday they will retire Ryan Getzlaf's No. 15 on Jan. 30 when they host the Nashville Predators. The 41-year-old played 17 seasons with the Ducks, including 12 as captain.

Getzlaf is Anaheim's all-time leader in games (1,157), points (1,019) and assists (737), and the franchise record holder in playoff games, goals, assists and points.

He will be the fourth player to have his number retired, joining Teemu Selanne (No. 8), Paul Kariya (No. 9) and Scott Niedermayer (No. 27). Getzlaf won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and helped Canada win Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014.

9. TCU Football Player Assaulted Teammate, Causing Brain Bleed

A Texas Christian University football player was arrested last weekend after he allegedly assaulted a teammate so severely that the teammate suffered a brain bleed, according to an arrest warrant. Jacob Fields, 21, turned himself in Sunday and was released on a $50,000 bond.

The warrant said that on Aug. 13, Dozie Noble Ezukanma was looking at his phone in the locker room when Fields struck him. A witness told police Fields punched Ezukanma in the forehead and then kicked him in the head on the floor. A CT scan showed a brain bleed, and Ezukanma was hospitalized for three days.

A TCU spokesperson said Fields was suspended Aug. 13 and dismissed two days later. Fields' attorney disputed the "life threatening" characterization and accused the school of withholding evidence. The investigation is ongoing.

10. Lawyer: Blues Prospect Matthew Mayich Has 'Zero Chance of Recovery'

A lawyer representing St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich has accused Arizona State University of failing to properly investigate the events that led to Mayich collapsing during an intense offseason workout. Lawyer Robert Carey said Mayich, who fell into a coma at Sun Angel Stadium on Aug. 20, has "zero chance of recovery."

According to The Athletic, the workout was a "military-style" session run by Tim Zeisel, a non-ASU employee and former service member, in temperatures just under 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Carey said players told him Zeisel yelled like a drill instructor and limited water to those who worked harder.

Sun Devils coach Greg Powers requested the workout. Zeisel's attorney said it only resembled a military exercise and focused on team-building. Mayich was a sixth-round pick (170th overall) in 2023 and joined ASU after his freshman season at Clarkson.
