On Saturday (Sept. 12), 27-year-old Elena Rybakina beat defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the US Open women's final to capture her first US Open title. With the win, she will officially replace Sabalenka as world No. 1 next week.

It was Rybakina's third Grand Slam title and her second of the year — she also beat Sabalenka in the Australian Open final to open the season. She ended Sabalenka's 19-match winning streak at the US Open, where Sabalenka was bidding for a third straight crown.

Rybakina earned $5.5 million, the largest prize in Grand Slam history, while Sabalenka took home $2.8 million. Born in Russia and representing Kazakhstan, Rybakina already owns the 2022 Wimbledon title and now needs only the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam.

George Chuvalo, the charismatic five-time Canadian heavyweight boxing champion who was never knocked off his feet in 93 professional fights, died on Saturday — his 89th birthday.

The son of Croatian immigrants, Chuvalo is best remembered for his valorous 15-round loss to Muhammad Ali for the WBC heavyweight title at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens on March 29, 1966, a bout that made the working-class Toronto boxer a national hero.

Chuvalo retired with a record of 73 wins, 18 losses and two draws, with 64 of his wins by knockout. He spent his final years in a Toronto retirement residence after suffering from dementia following a career of blows to the head.

The Montreal Canadiens announced Saturday they have signed forward Chris Kreider to a one-year contract. According to PuckPedia, the deal is worth $2.15 million. Kreider was placed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks earlier this week for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Per TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, Kreider chose Montreal for his "comfort level" with head coach Martin St. Louis and his history with president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton. Last season, Kreider had 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points in 75 games with the Ducks.

Kreider has 348 goals and 284 assists for 632 points in 958 career NHL games. Notably, he injured then-Canadiens goaltender Carey Price during the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs, making him one of the most booed athletes in modern Montreal sports history.
