The Milwaukee Brewers drew first blood in the National League Championship Series, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 in Game 1 at American Family Field on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Dodgers starter Tarik Skubal struck out seven over five innings but took the loss after allowing two runs, while Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski departed with one out in the fifth — yet Milwaukee's lineup made its chances count.
The game turned in the fourth and fifth innings. Brice Turang tied it in the fourth by lifting an inside sinker over the left-centre fence into the Brewers' bullpen, and in the fifth Skubal walked Garrett Mitchell, rookie Cooper Pratt bunted him over and Luis Lara drove in the go-ahead run with a ground-ball single up the middle. The Dodgers stranded nine runners and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, hitting into three inning-ending double plays in the first five innings.

2. NFL Week 5: Packers Rout Bears 31-7, 49ers Edge Seahawks

The Green Bay Packers trounced the Chicago Bears 31-7 at Lambeau Field on Sunday, exacting revenge for last season's playoff collapse. Jordan Love completed 25 of 31 passes for 367 yards — the most by a Packers quarterback against the Bears at Lambeau — while Christian Watson caught 42- and 53-yard touchdown passes and MarShawn Lloyd also scored twice. With Bears quarterback Caleb Williams missing a third straight game with a hamstring injury, backup Tyson Bagent was intercepted twice by Xavier McKinney as Green Bay forced five turnovers to move to 3-2, above .500 for the first time this season.
Elsewhere, Brock Purdy engineered two fourth-quarter scoring drives as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 on the road to open 5-0, with Eddy Pineiro kicking a 43-yard field goal with 1:56 to play. The Minnesota Vikings stayed unbeaten at 5-0 with a 23-13 win over the New Orleans Saints, as Justin Jefferson marked his return with a leaping touchdown catch.

3. Cardinals Trade Marvin Harrison Jr. to Texans for Draft Picks

The Arizona Cardinals traded wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans on Sunday. According to Yahoo Sports, Arizona sends Harrison and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Houston in exchange for 2027 second- and sixth-round picks. Harrison, the No. 4 overall pick in 2024 out of Ohio State, never lived up to expectations over two-plus seasons in Arizona.
The deal drew mixed reactions around the league. Former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson, in the New York Jets' locker room, said he was thrilled: "I was praying something happened with him." The Cardinals, the report said, capitalised on a team eager for a receiver that believed in Harrison more than the other 31 clubs.
4. Purdy Leads 49ers Past Seahawks 32-29

The San Francisco 49ers improved to 5-0 with a 32-29 road win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Quarterback Brock Purdy engineered two fourth-quarter scoring drives and set up Eddy Pineiro's 43-yard go-ahead field goal with 1:56 remaining; offseason signing Mike Evans proved the difference, repeatedly coming up with catches, including a 28-yard grab that bailed the Niners out of a second-and-21 hole.
The game featured an NFL season-high seven combined turnovers and the ejection of 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Purdy hit newcomer Brandin Cooks for a 7-yard touchdown and then found Evans for a two-point conversion to put San Francisco ahead 29-26; Seattle answered with a game-tying field goal before Jaxon Smith-Njigba dropped a third-down pass on the Seahawks' final possession.

5. Rangers Cruise Past Canucks 6-2 After Shesterkin Injury

The New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in their first game since learning that No. 1 goaltender Igor Shesterkin would miss the rest of the season with a lower-body injury. Shesterkin was hurt in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, and the team announced Saturday he would be out for the year, handing the starter's role to Dylan Garand, who made 19 saves.
Tye Kartye and Will Cuylle each scored their first two goals of the season, while Alexis Lafreniere and Gabe Perreault had a goal and an assist apiece. The Rangers improved to 5-2-0 and are 4-0-0 at home; the Canucks, who got goals from Jake DeBrusk and defenceman Elias Pettersson, fell to 2-5-0 with a fourth straight loss.

6. Georgia Takes Over at No. 1 in AP Top 25
Source: NBC Sports
Georgia moved to No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday. After five straight polls at No. 2, the Bulldogs went on the road and beat Alabama 20-17 — their first win in Tuscaloosa since 2014 — to claim 66 of 70 first-place votes and reach the top spot for the first time since Sept. 8, 2024.
Texas dropped six spots to No. 7 after losing to rival Oklahoma, and Oregon fell out of the poll for the first time in four years following a 15-17 home loss to UCLA. Notre Dame rose to No. 2, Miami is No. 3, Ohio State and Indiana are fourth and fifth, and Alabama held at No. 6. UCLA jumped nine spots to No. 12, while Kentucky climbed from unranked to No. 15.

7. Verstappen Wins Singapore as Antonelli Closes on F1 Title
Source: Sportsnet.ca
Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, his second straight Formula 1 victory after Malaysia a week earlier and his first in 10 attempts at the Marina Bay circuit. Verstappen was slow off the line from pole again but squeezed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to the inside at the first corner to hold the lead; Leclerc finished second for his first podium since July.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli overtook Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton to take third and extend his championship lead, meaning he could become F1's youngest-ever champion as soon as the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Oct. 25. Teammate George Russell recovered from the back to finish ninth, while Montreal's Lance Stroll did not finish.

8. Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Has Laser Eye Surgery
Source: Sportsnet.ca
Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has undergone laser eye surgery, beginning his off-season. Sportsnet confirmed the procedure, after The Laser Eye Center of Miami posted on Instagram on Friday that Guerrero "is doing great at his post-op" following surgery by Dr. Gabriel Lazcano.
The 27-year-old posted full-season career lows with a .260 batting average, .332 on-base percentage, .688 OPS, nine home runs and 57 RBIs; his 56 walks over 609 plate appearances were his fewest in a full season since his 2019 rookie year, perhaps pointing to the vision correction. Toronto missed the post-season with a 79-83 record. Guerrero is set to enter the second season of a 14-year, $500-million contract extension signed in April 2025.

9. Toronto FC Stun CF Montreal 2-1 with Late Double
Source: Sportsnet.ca
Toronto FC came from behind to beat CF Montreal 2-1 at home on Saturday to win the 39th edition of the 401 Derby. Substitutes Lewis Morgan and Djordje Mihailovic both scored in second-half stoppage time as head coach Robin Fraser's changes paid off; backup goalkeeper William Yarbrough came on after starter Luka Gavran suffered an early leg injury.
Toronto improved to 7-10-11, while Montreal fell to 6-16-6. Mihailovic, limited to 12 matches by injuries and a red-card suspension, called it "one of the most difficult years in my life." Yarbrough, 37, made his first appearance since Sept. 21, 2024, when he played for the San Jose Earthquakes, and said that in a derby it doesn't matter how you play — only that you get the three points.

10. Blue Bombers Beat Stampeders 33-28 to Boost Playoff Hopes
Source: Winnipeg Free Press
In the CFL, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the Calgary Stampeders 33-28 in front of a sold-out Princess Auto Stadium on Saturday night. Veteran quarterback Zach Collaros and No. 1 target Dorian Singer led the way as Winnipeg improved to 8-8, significantly boosting its playoff hopes.
The loss dropped Calgary to 8-9, after the Stampeders could have clinched a playoff berth with a win. The Bombers sit fourth but own tiebreakers over both Calgary and Saskatchewan, so they need only to finish with at least the same record as those West Division rivals; if Saskatchewan (8-7) loses Monday in Montreal, Winnipeg would move up to third. Receiver Nic Demski called Collaros's performance "vintage Eight-Ball."
