1. ChangXin Memory's market cap hits ~2.5x Moutai, A-share "top dog" tops 4 trillion yuan again

On the afternoon of Aug 17, ChangXin Memory Technologies (688825.SH) — the most valuable stock on the A-share market — surged over 10% to above 60 yuan per share, a record high, with intraday market capitalization topping 4 trillion yuan. That figure equals roughly 2.5 times the market value of Kweichow Moutai (600519.SH), keeping it firmly atop the A-share leaderboard.

As China's leading domestic DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) maker, ChangXin Memory listed on the STAR Market on July 27, soaring more than 465% on its debut with a market cap above 3.3 trillion yuan. The latest rally was driven by broad strength in the memory-chip sector — the ChiNext jumped 3.14% and the Shenzhen Component rose 2.44%, with semiconductor and memory names leading the advance.

2. Geely reshuffles leadership: Li Shufu steps down as chairman, An Conghui takes over

On Aug 17, Geely Automobile (00175.HK) announced a major management reshuffle at its interim results briefing: effective Aug 18, 2026, Li Shufu stepped down as chairman of the board and executive director, was named honorary chairman for life, and will continue to serve as chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

An Conghui succeeds him as board chairman; Gui Shengyue stepped down as CEO and became vice chairman; and Gan Jiayue was appointed CEO. Analysts widely see this as a key step in Geely's push toward professional management and de-family governance, with Li Shufu moving from the front office to the back office to pave the way for "One Geely" synergies.

3. Apple reportedly to raise iPhone 17 prices globally by end of month, up to ~1,000 yuan more

According to supply-chain sources, Apple plans to complete a global price adjustment for the iPhone 17 lineup across all regions before the end of August 2026, with price increases capped at no more than 1,000 yuan per device and the adjustment benchmarked against the pricing plan already rolled out in Japan.

The news quickly drew market attention. If implemented, it would mark a global price adjustment for the iPhone 17 series since its launch, pushing up consumer purchase costs. Apple is seen as using the increases to hedge against currency, cost and tariff pressures.

4. WuXi AppTec's market cap tops 500 billion yuan as valuation repair accelerates

On Aug 17, WuXi AppTec's A-shares hit a record high, rising more than 5% intraday with total market capitalization surpassing 500 billion yuan — a rebound of over 80% from its low for the year — making it a leader in the innovative-drug sector.

Earlier, WuXi AppTec secured a preliminary injunction in its lawsuit over the U.S. Department of Defense's "1260H list", easing geopolitical risks. Combined with the overseas expansion of innovative drugs and recovering order expectations, institutional funds have flowed back, accelerating the valuation-repair rally.

5. Hong Kong stocks rise across the board, Hang Seng up 1.34% to snap losing streak

On Aug 17, all three major Hong Kong indexes closed higher: the Hang Seng rose 1.34% to 25,453.23 points, the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 1.58% and the HSCEI added 1.19%, with the Hang Seng and HSCEI both snapping earlier losing streaks.

On the sector front, internet stocks rebounded broadly — JD.com rose over 2%, while Alibaba, Tencent, Xiaomi and Bilibili each gained more than 1%. Semiconductor and optical-communication names led, with SMIC up over 7% and Yangtze Optical Fibre surging over 12%; gold stocks were also active.

6. Nikkei 225 up 0.74%; Kioxia gains nearly 4% while Dentsu tumbles 10%

On Aug 17, Japanese stocks advanced, with the Nikkei 225 closing up 0.74% at 69,220.25 points. South Korean markets were closed for a holiday, leaving Asia-Pacific trading relatively quiet.

Among individual names, memory-chip maker Kioxia rose nearly 4% at one point on active turnover, while advertising giant Dentsu Group slumped 10%, its biggest one-day drop since Jan 14, making it the heaviest drag on the Japanese market that day.

7. South Korean stocks re-enter a technical bull market as AI trading returns

After last month's historic sell-off, South Korean stocks have staged a strong rebound. The KOSPI index has surged nearly 23% from its July 30 low, re-entering technical bull-market territory.

The rebound has been driven by a revival in global AI trading, led by heavyweight memory-chip giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Analysts caution, however, that a "fragile bull market" overly reliant on a handful of semiconductor heavyweights remains risky, making diversification increasingly important.

8. Taiwan Weighted Index closes up 0.10% at 45,857.27

On Aug 17, the Taiwan Weighted Index closed up 0.10% at 45,857.27 points, gaining 46.26 points on the day and extending a pattern of mild, range-bound gains.

Taiwan stocks were relatively restrained, with tech heavyweight shares mixed. Against a backdrop of broad gains across Asia-Pacific markets, Taiwan's advance clearly lagged mainland China, Hong Kong and the Japan-Korea markets, mainly due to a lack of clear catalysts.

9. Spot gold breaks back above $4,400 as risk-off demand rises

Spot gold climbed back above $4,400 per ounce, up about 0.56% on the day to $4,402.97. Over the past week or so, gold has breached several key round-number levels in succession, fueling renewed bull-market sentiment.

A softer U.S. dollar and cooling expectations for Federal Reserve rate hikes have been the core drivers of the rally, while uncertainty over Middle East geopolitics continues to underpin safe-haven assets, markedly strengthening bullish sentiment on gold's outlook.

10. Oil rallies and US data cool Fed rate-hike expectations

International oil prices rose more than $1 a barrel as investors kept a close watch on tense U.S.-Iran negotiations. At the same time, newly released U.S. retail and other data came in soft, prompting markets to dial back expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike.

As a result, the U.S. dollar weakened, while U.S. and European equities both fell under pressure last Friday. Analysts believe that if the Fed's rate-hike path eases further, the relationship between risk assets and commodities such as gold and crude oil will be repriced.
