Citing Reuters, OpenAI said in a blog post that it has notified more than 100 organizations that an unauthorized activity incident related to its AI agents had occurred. OpenAI is now facing growing scrutiny over runaway AI agent activity.

After an incident in which an AI agent accidentally breached Hugging Face, OpenAI has been conducting a broad review of its AI models' activity, screening roughly 50 petabytes of data to determine the full scope of the rogue agent activity. OpenAI had previously said that, given the scale of the work, the review would take months to complete.

OpenAI said: "In some cases, models used internet access in unintended ways, or, in hindsight, were not subject to the ideal restrictions at the time. Over the past few months we have been adopting new technical and operational measures to avoid such problems, or to detect them early, and we will continue this work." So far, the Hugging Face incident remains the most serious rogue-agent activity OpenAI has found in its models.

2. ChatGPT Now Lets You Virtually Try On Clothes

Source: TechCrunch

OpenAI is once again experimenting with ways its conversational AI assistant, ChatGPT, can help users as they shop online. On Thursday, the company announced the global launch of two new shopping features, including a way to virtually try on clothing and accessories and a new function for saving products you like.

The features build on the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which OpenAI says produces more natural lighting and richer textures and follows editing instructions more reliably. Users can upload a selfie or a full-body photo, then tap a new "Try On" button in ChatGPT's shopping results to visualize how a garment or accessory might look on them; they can also upload an image of an item, such as a web screenshot, and ask ChatGPT to try it on.

The other new option, Favorites, lets users save products to a Library in the app for later reference. Users can also describe a style they'd like and ask ChatGPT to shop for the pieces needed, or upload photos of celebrities' outfits and ask it to find wearable versions available for purchase. Google launched virtual try-on last year, so whether ChatGPT becomes people's first choice remains to be seen.

3. CapCut's Maker Jianying Launches AI Interactive-Film Platform ICG Studio

Source: Huxiu

Ahead of China's National Day holiday, ByteDance's video-editing app Jianying (CapCut's Chinese counterpart) held a product launch, rolling out a full slate of updates: the Hub all-in-one workspace, the Jianying Assistant Agent, the mobile "Xiaoying," and an AI Ultra membership tier, while debuting ICG Studio, an AI interactive-film creation platform that pushes its reach from video editing into interactive content.

Two points drew industry attention: first, Jianying Hub links AI video generation with AI editing for the first time; official figures show that the same asset-production task takes about 10 minutes in the traditional workflow but only 5 minutes with Jianying Hub, an efficiency gain of more than 50%. Second, ICG Studio, now in beta, draws on ByteDance's models and Jianying's creator ecosystem and covers the whole process from script and storyboard to editing.

Huxiu, however, argues that while ICG Studio covers the basic production steps of interactive films and lifts tool efficiency, it has not fundamentally moved beyond a "video generation + branching choices" framework, and looks more like a probing bet on the category. Separately, the new AI Ultra membership includes 22,100 AI credits a month plus Jianying SVIP benefits, priced at 199 yuan a month, with a launch 50% discount to 99 yuan.

4. Toshiba to Spend 60 Billion Yen to Double Data-Center HDD Capacity

Source: Mydrivers

October 2 (Kuaikeji) — As the AI boom drives up prices for memory, flash and hard drives, Toshiba, the world's third-largest HDD maker, has announced an expansion. While Western Digital and Seagate show little appetite for adding capacity, Toshiba plans to double its output.

Toshiba said it will spend 60 billion yen (about $380 million, or 2.55 billion yuan) to expand its factory in the Philippines, aiming to double its data-center HDD capacity next year to meet growing AI infrastructure demand. It is also Toshiba's first large-scale capacity investment in five years.

In 2025, Toshiba held an 11% share of the global HDD market and has a long-term goal of 30%, but it now trails Seagate (47%) and Western Digital (42%) by a wide margin. Seagate and Western Digital also effectively monopolize the HDDs needed for AI infrastructure, shipping drives with an average capacity of 14TB last year, versus Toshiba's average of under 9TB.

5. US Man Arrested Over Alleged Smuggling of $300M in AI-Chip Servers to China

Source: 8world

A US man has been arrested by federal agents on suspicion of illegally diverting more than $300 million worth of servers carrying restricted AI chips to China. According to Bloomberg, the US Department of Justice said 38-year-old Greg Lui runs a computer company in California.

Prosecutors allege that he worked with others between 2023 and 2024 to buy high-end servers equipped with advanced Nvidia AI chips while misstating the goods' final destination and forging documents. The equipment was first exported to Singapore and Malaysia and then diverted to China to evade US export restrictions, prosecutors said.

In one deal, he bought 27 servers equipped with Nvidia H100 chips for about $7.6 million and arranged to ship them to Malaysia before they were forwarded to China. Court documents show his company received more than $176 million last year from two Malaysian logistics firms. Lui faces charges including violating US export controls, smuggling and conspiracy to commit money laundering; if convicted, he could face more than 20 years in prison.

6. AT&T Acknowledges iPhone 18 Pro Max Issues: "Update Immediately"

Source: MacRumors

In a text message sent to customers, AT&T acknowledged that some iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on its network are experiencing cellular issues. AT&T told customers to immediately update to iOS 27.0.1, even though many affected users say the update does not resolve the problem. At least thousands of users have now run into the issue.

Affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users are unable to connect to the AT&T network for calls, texts or data, persistently or intermittently, and their devices typically enter SOS mode as a result. The underlying cause has not been confirmed, and Apple has yet to comment publicly.

Notably, the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone unveiled last month equipped with a Qualcomm cellular modem; the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo use Apple's C2 modem worldwide. Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 did not mention a fix for the AT&T cellular issues, only a Face ID fix for the iPhone 18 Pro models.

8. Scientists Confirm Radio Signals From a Single Planet Beyond Our Solar System for the First Time

Source: BBC Sky at Night Magazine

Researchers have captured direct radio-wave emissions originating from a planet outside our Solar System. Using South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope array, an international team detected variable bursts coming from Beta Pictoris b.

The discovery is not a sign of extraterrestrial life. The target is a massive gas giant located about 63 light-years from Earth. Because the star it orbits is magnetically quiet, the researchers were able to isolate the radio signal from that particular planet.

This marks the first time a radio signal has been confirmed as coming from a single planet rather than an entire system. Studying these radio waves could reveal details about the magnetic fields of other Jupiter-like planets across the Galaxy. Understanding planetary magnetic fields is crucial in the search for habitable worlds, because they protect atmospheres from stellar winds.

9. Huawei Executive Shares Sample Shots From the Ruiying Z10 Module Camera: 24-240mm in One Lens

Source: Mydrivers

October 2 (Kuaikeji) — While out on holiday, He Gang, an executive of Huawei's Consumer BG terminal unit, tested the Ruiying Z10 module camera and posted sample photos on Weibo, showing how the external imaging device performs in practice.

The module mounts on the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector's Edition with a twist and a click. Unlike an ordinary teleconverter, the Ruiying Z10 is itself a complete camera module with a built-in 1-inch sensor; it does not rely on the phone's own lenses to form an image, leaving the phone to handle framing, processing and saving photos.

It covers an equivalent focal range of 24mm-240mm with 10x continuous optical zoom: 24mm wide-angle suits landscapes and architecture, mid-range focal lengths suit everyday documentary and portrait shots, and 240mm telephoto can capture distant subjects and close-ups. Shooters can turn a physical zoom ring on the lens or tap the screen to change focal length, and it supports the full XMAGE color-filter suite. Note that the module currently only fits the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector's Edition and the Mate RS.

10. An AI-Generated Fake Crocodile Photo Could Land a Singapore Man in Prison for Up to 10 Years

Source: Mydrivers

October 2 (Kuaikeji) — According to media reports, a Singaporean man, Ye Lin (transliteration), apparently as a joke in August, used Google's Gemini to generate an AI image of a saltwater crocodile appearing at Pandan Reservoir and sent it to a colleague.

The image was then reported to Singapore's national water agency, PUB, and PUB and the National Parks Board suspended all water activities in the area for two days, searching for a crocodile that did not exist, only to confirm the next day that the image was a fake and call the police. Ye Lin was arrested.

The charges he faces are far more serious than he expected. Under Singapore law, spreading false information carries up to three years in prison, a fine of S$10,000, or both. He also deleted the image and the Gemini app from his phone to cover it up, drawing an additional obstruction-of-justice charge that carries up to seven years in prison; combined, the maximum sentence could reach 10 years. He has said he will plead guilty and not hire a lawyer, and the case is due to return to court in November.
