Two people are dead after a single-vehicle crash in North York early Saturday morning.

Toronto police said officers responded to the area of Romfield Lane and Finch Avenue West just before 5 a.m. Duty Insp. Peter Wallace told reporters a 39-year-old man was driving the vehicle with a 42-year-old male passenger when it struck a light pole. Emergency crews began life-saving measures, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the impact completely knocked down the traffic light pole and deployed the vehicle's airbags. "This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased," Wallace said. The intersection remains closed while police investigate.

2. Pedestrian seriously injured in hit-and-run on Queen Street West

A pedestrian is in hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene in Toronto's west end Saturday morning.

Police said the collision happened at around 11 a.m. in the area of Queen Street West and Shaw Street. The driver and vehicle failed to remain at the scene.

Emergency crews said the victim was rushed to hospital in serious condition. As a result, eastbound Queen Street West is closed at Shaw Street while police investigate, and drivers are being asked to consider alternate routes.

3. Driver flees after motorcycle crash on Gardiner Expressway

A motorcyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after an early morning hit-and-run crash on Toronto's Gardiner Expressway.

Police said officers responded to the collision near the Gardiner Expressway West and Spadina Avenue just before 5 a.m. Paramedics told CP24 they transported a 35-year-old woman in "serious but stable condition."

Police said the driver and vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene. Three left lanes of the westbound Gardiner Expressway are closed while the investigation continues.

4. Cyclist rides every street in Toronto over five-and-a-half years

A Toronto man has completed a five-and-a-half-year journey riding every street in the city, covering 6,784 kilometres in total.

Dave Laird, a 52-year-old graphic designer and photographer from Leslieville, began the project while training for a 24-hour mountain bike race. Using the open-source GPS tracker Wandrer, he started recording rides throughout the city and became "immediately addicted." In August alone, he rode 554.88 kilometres.

Laird said he had no collisions with cars over the five-and-a-half years, and only two flat tires. After a 2024 mountain-biking accident in which he broke his neck and back in seven places, he took six months off and returned to the streets in September. Today, he said, Toronto "just kind of feels like my town."

5. Jazz Aviation flight attendants vote for strike mandate

A union representing more than 1,000 flight attendants with Jazz Aviation says members have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike mandate.

The Canadian Flight Attendant Union said 99 per cent of voting members supported a strike mandate after months of bargaining. Jazz Aviation operates flights under the Air Canada Express brand.

Union president Marsha Walters said they want members fairly compensated for their work. The flight attendants have been without a contract since Jan. 1. Halifax-based Jazz, owned by Chorus Aviation, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

6. Poll: Canadians support rejecting U.S. trade deal

Canadians overwhelmingly support the Carney government's decision to reject a recent trade deal with the U.S., according to a Nanos Research survey conducted for CTV News.

On Aug. 21, trade talks between Ottawa and Washington broke down and Prime Minister Mark Carney decided to walk away from the deal. The U.S. imposed 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of Canadian products the next day, and Ottawa announced dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of American imports set to take effect Sept. 8.

Three in four Canadians (75 per cent) support rejecting the deal, with another 10 per cent somewhat supportive. Four in five support or somewhat support Canada's counter-tariffs. More than three-quarters say they have sought out Canadian products (78 per cent) and avoided U.S. goods and services (77 per cent).

7. 120-year-old Calgary home at centre of rezoning debate

The future of a historic Calgary estate could be at risk if a developer proceeds with a proposal to turn the space into multi-residential development.

The Sayre Estate, built in 1905, sits on a one-acre property at 717 Royal Ave S.W. It is the last surviving example of the hillside estates built in the first phase of the Mount Royal neighbourhood, but the city is considering a land use application to allow up to 20 units, with buildings potentially up to 18 metres high.

Neighbour Sander Duncanson said he would like to see the estate preserved. "Once we lose something like this, we can't just get it back," said Heritage Calgary executive director Erika Topola. The city is accepting comments until Sept. 24.

8. Rising bond yields could push up mortgage costs

The surge in global bond yields is increasing borrowing costs for households and companies, and household mortgages could be next.

Concerns about U.S. debt and inflation have led to rising global bond yields in recent weeks. On Wednesday, the five-year Government of Canada bond yield was the highest in more than two years, and the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield — a key benchmark for mortgage rates — reached its highest level since 2023.

9. Blue Bombers mock 'Regina-style pizza' ahead of Labour Day Classic

Playful trash talk ahead of the annual Labour Day Classic has left a bad taste in the mouths of some Saskatchewan Roughriders fans.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers issued a Facebook statement this week about their distaste for Regina-style pizza, calling it "awful" and comparing a slice to three-week-old lasagna slapped onto a piece of dough. The team first went on record saying "Regina-style pizza is terrible" back in 2023.

The dish was invented more than 50 years ago by the father and uncles of Jim Kolitsas, who described its thick dough, generous meat and caramelized mozzarella topping. "Winnipeg must be saying that because they are nervous about the game and going to lose on Sunday," Kolitsas said.

10. Blue Jays whip Royals 9-2, back to .500

Alejandro Kirk, Ernie Clement and George Springer drove in two runs apiece to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 9-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Blue Jays starter Jameson Taillon, making his first appearance since Aug. 10 after a stint on the injured list with right forearm tendinitis, left after two innings with right elbow discomfort. Kirk and Clement each had a double as the Blue Jays (71-71) got back to .500 for the first time since June 22 and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Toronto remains one game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final American League wild-card berth.
