1. Toronto police identify second victim found inside burning vehicle

Toronto police have identified a second man whose body was found inside a burning vehicle earlier this week. He is 30-year-old Mohamud Kheyre. Police say they were called to two similar car fires — one in Scarborough and the other in Etobicoke.

The first occurred just north of the Toronto Zoo, near Steeles Avenue East and Reesor Road, with investigators called to the area just before 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 21. The second happened near Royal York Road and Edenbridge Drive, where police attended just before 1 a.m. on Sept. 22. In both cases, emergency responders found a deceased victim inside a vehicle that was on fire — the Scarborough vehicle was in a field, while the Etobicoke one was in a parking lot.

Det.-Sgt. Henri Marsman, of Toronto police's Homicide and Missing Persons Unit, said the first victim was 32-year-old Marcus Charles, a Scarborough resident identified through fingerprints and found inside a rental vehicle. Investigators believe he was killed within a 24-hour period prior to the fire. Marsman said the second victim was found inside a vehicle stolen somewhere in the Greater Toronto Area. Autopsies confirmed both men sustained fatal gunshot wounds prior to the fires. No suspect information has been released and police believe both victims were targeted, though there is no ongoing threat to the public. These are Toronto's 27th and 28th homicides of 2026.

2. Toronto man charged with murder following deadly North York stabbing

A 46-year-old man from Toronto has been charged with second-degree murder following a deadly stabbing in North York on Saturday night. The incident happened at an apartment building on Tangreen Court, near Steeles Avenue West and Hilda Avenue, just west of Yonge Street.

Toronto police said they were called to the area just before 8:30 p.m. for a report of a stabbing and found a male victim who had been stabbed. In a follow-up news release, police said two people were involved in a physical altercation when one of them stabbed the other. Life-saving measures were performed on the victim, who was later pronounced dead on scene. The suspect was arrested at the scene.

Meir Cohen, 46, of Toronto, has been charged with second-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in bail court on Sunday morning. The charge has not been tested in court. The victim, described by police as a male in his 50s, will be identified once next-of-kin notifications have been made. This is Toronto's 29th homicide of 2026, and the investigation is ongoing.

3. Four killed in Quebec helicopter crash; one woman loses partner, mother and brother

Suzanne Jutras, Gabriel Jasmin, Chantal Raymond and Loucas Perreault from Quebec are the victims of a helicopter crash that occurred Saturday afternoon on Montreal's South Shore. Provincial police, the Sûreté du Québec, were called around 2:30 p.m. after a helicopter crashed and caught fire near Rang des Écossais off Highway 10 in the Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville municipality. The four victims were declared dead at the scene, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating.

CTV News spoke to Jutras' stepbrother and neighbour, who confirmed she was among the victims. Jutras, 50, was a pilot for several years and had owned two helicopters. Les Félixeries, a family festival in the municipality of Saint-Félix-de-Kingsey, said in a Facebook post that she had been their pilot for three years, offering condolences to her partner, family and friends. The Haut-Richelieu UPA union, which represents agricultural producers, said Jutras' husband, Yves Boulais, is a field crop farmer and former dairy farmer in the region.

A Facebook post by Océane Perreault confirmed the other three victims were her partner, Gabriel Jasmin, her mother, Chantal Raymond, and her brother, Loucas Perreault. She wrote that on September 26 "a part of my world flew away into the sky," describing a helicopter ride meant to be a highlight of her mother's celebration. Jasmin was a host at Sherbrooke radio station 106.1 Énergie and has a daughter with Océane Perreault. Bell Media, which owns the station, offered its condolences and said psychological support would be available to its Sherbrooke team on Monday.

4. Poilievre urges tax cuts to make diesel fuel more affordable

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is pitching a plan to cut federal taxes on diesel fuel and help ensure Canada has affordable supplies of the fuel in the future. Poilievre says Canada already produces enough diesel to meet national demand, but transportation bottlenecks leave some regions dependent on U.S. imports.

He proposes eliminating all tax on diesel sales until at least Canada Day by extending the full fuel excise tax cut until July 1 of next year and removing the GST from the purchase of fuel. Poilievre also advocates removing all diesel production taxes by permanently scrapping the federal industrial carbon tax and the Clean Fuel Standard, which he says adds costs to the production of diesel and discourages new investment in refineries.

Poilievre outlined the policy proposal at a suburban Ottawa gas station. He says the Conservative plan would expand refining capacity, help refineries process more Canadian crude and build the transportation and storage infrastructure needed to supply every region. 5. Man dies after two-vehicle crash in Brampton

A man has died following a two-vehicle crash in Brampton on Sunday morning. Peel Regional Police say the crash happened around 8 a.m. at Queen Street and West Drive. One person was initially taken to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police later confirmed on social media that the male victim had died. The Major Collision Bureau is investigating. Westbound Queen Street was closed between Dixie Road and West Drive as police investigated, and motorists were asked to use alternate routes.

6. Man in his 30s killed in motorcycle crash in Toronto

A motorcyclist in his 30s has died after a single-vehicle collision on Lake Shore Boulevard West early Sunday morning. Toronto police say officers responded to reports of a collision involving a motorcycle at around 5 a.m. in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard West and British Columbia Road. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking to reporters, Duty Insp. Jon Rose said the preliminary investigation indicates speed may have been a factor, but the circumstances are still being investigated. Rose said the victim's family has been notified and is "distraught." He said the scene is "quite large" and that officers with Traffic Services and the reconstruction unit will need time to investigate.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken with investigators to contact Traffic Services. Lake Shore Boulevard West is closed between British Columbia Road and Ontario Drive, and drivers are asked to use alternate routes and expect delays.

9. 'Run Terry Run' documentary takes viewers back to 1980 with Terry Fox

A new documentary by Sean Menard, "Run Terry Run," explores the iconic Canadian's life on the road and in the van through archival footage of the Marathon of Hope. In 1980, Terry Fox ran across the country for the Marathon of Hope — one marathon every day for 143 days — with an entire country cheering him on.

Using video taken at the time and voice-over interviews of people who knew Terry Fox, Menard wanted to immerse people in the run as it happened. "I just wanted to bring people back to 1980 as best I could," Menard said. The film charts Fox's entire journey from dipping his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean to the abrupt end of his run near Thunder Bay in Ontario after cancer returned to his lungs. All 5,373 kilometres are accounted for.

Menard said the details are getting lost and he wanted to create the definitive story so they aren't forgotten, interviewing only people who were in the van. He said he was shocked at how young Fox was and how little media attention he got early on. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and recently played at the Atlantic International Film Festival in Halifax, where Menard saw the restored original van. It will play at other Canadian festivals ahead of its wider theatrical release on Oct. 9, with ticket sale proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Residents of coastal communities in the Northeast slogged through floodwaters for a second day as a powerful nor'easter pummeled the shoreline Sunday, knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes. Tidal surges swamped low-lying neighborhoods in New Jersey while wind gusts toppled trees on New York's Long Island.

The slow-moving storm, which killed a New York City housing authority worker when a tree fell Saturday, was expected to linger through Sunday with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf all the way to New England. The nor'easter triggered memories of Superstorm Sandy, which left behind over $60 billion in damage in 2012. It could be the first of several storms along the East Coast this fall because of an El Niño climate pattern.

More than 3 inches (7.6 centimetres) of rain had fallen in some areas of Long Island. Well over 100,000 customers were without power across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic at times on Sunday, and more than 250 flights had been canceled at Boston Logan International Airport by late Sunday morning as wind gusts reached 40 mph (64 kph). National Weather Service forecaster Bob Oravec said the storm was gradually weakening but tidal flooding would stay through high-tide cycles Sunday night. Carole Ann Palmer, who owns Jingles Bait and Tackle, said this was the worst flooding she's seen in 10 years.
