North York residents demand traffic light after 8-year-old girl seriously injured
Residents of a North York neighbourhood are calling for a traffic light at the Willowdale and Elmwood avenues intersection where an eight-year-old girl was seriously injured in a collision on the afternoon of Oct. 26. A woman in her 70s suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The city says it is now investigating whether a signal is warranted.
Resident Jasmine Yu launched a petition demanding an immediate traffic light and other safety measures until it is installed. It had gathered nearly 500 signatures by late Friday afternoon. Yu, a parent whose children attend the same local school as the injured girl, said many parents were shaken "because it really could have been any one of our children crossing that road."
Yu said the intersection sits at the top of a hill, so drivers do not see the flashing yellow lights until they are close, and many vehicles ignore pedestrians who press the button. Toronto police confirmed five reported collisions there since Jan. 1, 2021. City staff visited the site on Nov. 4, and Coun. Lily Cheng is pushing for a signal while also wanting traffic safety education brought back into classrooms.

One man killed in Etobicoke shooting, at least two suspects sought
Toronto police are investigating a homicide after a male was shot in Etobicoke on Saturday afternoon. Officers were called shortly before 4:30 p.m. to the area of Rathburn Road and The East Mall and found the victim, believed to be in his teens or early 20s, with gunshot wounds.
Insp. Jeff Allington said life-saving measures were performed before the victim was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim has not been identified and the homicide unit has taken over the case.
Police are looking for at least two suspects last seen wearing dark clothing. Allington said the investigation is in its very early stages and officers will be canvassing the neighbourhood, adding that police understand how traumatic such an event is for residents and workers in the area.

Measles case in Durham Region: three possible exposure locations named
Durham Region public health officials are investigating possible measles exposure after a child who returned from international travel tested positive for the highly contagious disease. In a release on Saturday, the Durham Region Health Department said the confirmed case was unimmunized.
Three possible exposure locations were listed: Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET552, which departed Addis Ababa at 11:32 p.m. East Africa Time on Nov. 2 and landed in Toronto at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 3; Toronto Pearson International Airport Terminal 1 on Nov. 3 between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.; and the Lakeridge Health Ajax-Pickering Emergency Department waiting room at 580 Harwood Ave. S. on Nov. 3 from 10:40 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those affected should watch for symptoms until Nov. 24.
Measles spreads through the air and symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes and a red rash that starts on the face and spreads down the body. Officials say anyone with symptoms should stay home and call ahead before visiting a clinic. Durham has had five confirmed cases this year, while Ontario reported 35 as of Oct. 13, according to Public Health Ontario.
Toronto's police chief wants your questions for live CP24 segment
Toronto residents with questions about safety in the city can put them directly to the police chief. On Friday, Nov. 13, Chief Myron Demkiw will join CP24 Breakfast live in studio for the second edition of the monthly "Ask the Chief" segment.
Viewers can record a short video of themselves asking a question and email it to NOW@CP24.COM. Topics can include public safety, auto theft, neighbourhood traffic, transit safety, crime trends, community policing or quality-of-life issues. The deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 11:59 p.m.
CP24 says its team will review all submissions and select a representative mix of questions reflecting the issues Torontonians care about most. Selected questions may be featured live on air during the Nov. 13 broadcast.

Toronto FC fall 4-1 in Philadelphia
Toronto FC lost 4-1 to the Philadelphia Union in Chester, Pa., on Saturday, allowing Philadelphia to secure an automatic berth in a best-of-three MLS Cup playoff series. Cavan Sullivan scored twice and Quinn Sullivan added a goal and two assists, making the brothers the third sibling duo in MLS history to each score for the same club in the same match.
Philadelphia (14-12-8) finished sixth in the Eastern Conference with 50 points. Since interim head coach Ryan Richter took over during the World Cup break, the Union earned 43 of a possible 57 points while outscoring opponents 48-22.
Toronto (9-13-12) was seeking its first road win over the Union since March 2019. Josh Sargent pulled Toronto within 2-1 in first-half stoppage time with a header off a Djordje Mihailovic corner. Philadelphia will face third-seeded New England in the playoffs.

Price, Bergeron headline 2026 Hockey Hall of Fame class
The 2026 Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place Monday, with goaltender Carey Price and centre Patrice Bergeron headlining the player category alongside Pekka Rinne, Keith Tkachuk and Cindy Curley. Brian Burke will be inducted as a builder.
Price, 39, of Anahim Lake, B.C., spent all 15 of his NHL seasons in Montreal, posting a 361-261-79 record, .917 save percentage, 2.51 goals-against average and 49 shutouts in 712 regular-season games. He won both the Hart and Vezina trophies in 2015 and is entering in his second year of eligibility.
Bergeron, 41, of L'Ancienne-Lorette, Que., played all 19 of his NHL seasons with Boston, winning the Cup in 2011, recording 1,040 points in 1,294 regular-season games and winning the Selke Trophy six times. Price recalled that when the Hall called in June he was driving to visit his grandmother in hospital: "I got to spend the rest of the day with my grandmother, who made a recovery."

Newfoundland and Labrador to send seniors cheques of up to $500
Newfoundland and Labrador will send cheques of up to $500 to nearly every senior in the province next month, an affordability program that skips applications and eligibility screening. Finance Minister Craig Pardy announced the measure in Torbay, and his department estimates about 130,000 people will receive payments.
A full $500 payment goes to every senior who reported less than $75,000 in income last year and was 65 by the end of 2025. The payment scales down to $100 for a senior who earned $100,000, and nothing is paid above that. The money will flow automatically in December.
Kimberly Leonard, CEO of Seniors NL, called the automatic rollout a welcome relief, saying application processes can be onerous and deter seniors, especially in rural communities. It is the third affordability measure announced by the province this fall, funded from higher oil royalty revenue, with about 20 per cent of the new money going to cost-of-living relief and 80 per cent to paying down debt.

P.E.I. doctors swap stethoscopes for guitars, raise $20K for hospital
A cover band made up of six P.E.I. doctors that started as a way to blow off steam has ended up with sold-out shows and more than $20,000 raised for Summerside's Prince County Hospital Foundation, which helps buy everything from X-ray and ultrasound equipment to ceiling lifts and stretchers.
Hospitalist Dr. Jonathan Sharpe began recruiting bandmates in 2024, and weekly rehearsals followed. Family physician Dr. David Antle said the group is "the best escape that we could have come up with," joking that it is cheaper than therapy.
Supporters designed merchandise to sell for the cause, and in 2025 the Flu Fighters were invited to play the nearly 300-seat Scott MacAulay Performing Arts Centre, where tickets did not last long. Two shows on Nov. 6 and 7 also sold out, the first in about 27 hours. The hospital's medical director, Dr. Tyler McDonell, said the music is boosting staff morale by bringing together colleagues who would not normally cross paths.

Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes central Japan, at least 22 injured
A strong earthquake shook central Japan early Sunday, shattering store windows, sending people fleeing from buildings and injuring at least 22 people, according to local media. Japan's Meteorological Agency put the magnitude at 5.7, while the U.S. Geological Survey reported 5.5. Smaller aftershocks followed.
The quake struck at 1:04 a.m. local time, about 40 kilometres below the surface in Shizuoka Prefecture. A wide area near Aichi Prefecture was affected, including Hamamatsu, the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, and the prefectures of Yamanashi and Gifu. It was not felt in Tokyo.
Television footage showed shattered store windows and glass on the streets, and a bookstore left with mounds of books that had flown off the shelves. Injuries included people who fell from stairs while trying to flee. Shinkansen bullet trains were running at slower speeds in the affected areas as a precaution.

Krakow square shooting kills six; suspect's family found dead
A Polish man with far-right views drove into the busy Main Square in Krakow on Saturday and opened fire at multiple stops with an automatic weapon, killing six people and injuring 15 before police shot and wounded him. Poland's defence minister described the attack as "an act of terror." The square sits in the heart of the Old Town of the country's second-largest city.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said the 25-year-old holds "very radical" and "ultranationalistic" views, adding that "everything indicates that he was fascinated by far-right ideologies." Hours later, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the bodies of three of the suspect's close family members, two women and a man, were found inside his home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski.
Four women and two men were killed; at least three of the women were Polish and one victim was a U.K. citizen. Thirteen people were hospitalized in serious condition, including two police officers. Mayor Łukasz Gibała said the city will be in official mourning until Wednesday.
