2. Carney brings pro-Canada campaign to Alberta as referendum nears

Prime Minister Mark Carney continues his pro-Canada campaign in Alberta as the clock ticks down to a referendum on whether the province should break up with Confederation. He is set to visit Red Deer with Premier Danielle Smith today and later rally in Edmonton with the federalist group Forever Canadian.

Carney spoke Thursday at one of the group's rallies in Calgary, telling a crowd of roughly 5,000 that a vote against Canada is a dangerous bluff that could lead to years of lost opportunities. He says frustrations in Alberta are real, but Canada is working in the spirit of co-operative federalism. Smith has put 10 questions on Monday's referendum, including one on whether Alberta should stay in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on leaving.

3. Cleveland-Cliffs CEO accuses Canada of 'bullying and harassment' over Stelco threats

The CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs said the company's decision to issue hundreds of layoff notices at the Stelco plant in Hamilton, Ont., was a "business decision to concentrate production." In an exclusive interview with BNN Bloomberg Thursday, Lourenco Goncalves said he intends to rehire the laid off workers, calling the job cuts "temporary."

The federal government said Cleveland-Cliffs, which bought Stelco in 2024, pledged to protect jobs. Last month the U.S. company announced it was shutting down part of its Hamilton operation and cutting up to 500 jobs due to U.S. tariffs, and Ottawa said the move breaks commitments made under the Investment Canada Act. Industry Minister Melanie Joly said Wednesday that "everything is on the table," including a forced divestment or financial penalties. Goncalves called Joly's comments "bullying and harassment" and said the company is prepared to go to court.

4. Toronto murder suspect arrested in Nova Scotia, another remains at large

A man has been arrested, and another suspect remains wanted in connection with a murder in a Toronto Community Housing building earlier this month. Toronto police said 31-year-old Leeroy Chikonyora of Toronto was arrested by the RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment earlier Thursday and has since been charged with first-degree murder in the homicide of 34-year-old Christopher Gordon.

Police said Gordon was found with traumatic injuries in a fourth-floor unit near Flemington Road and Blossomfield Drive on the morning of Oct. 4, and was pronounced dead despite life-saving measures. He is the city's 30th homicide victim of the year. The victim was not a resident of the building, and it is still unknown why he was there. Investigators are still searching for 32-year-old Cody Rudifo of Timmins, wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for first-degree murder. Police warn he is considered armed and dangerous.

5. Two suspects sought after stolen POS machine used for frauds over $500K

Toronto police are looking for two suspects after a point-of-sale machine was stolen from a downtown business and used to commit multiple frauds totalling more than half a million dollars. Police said the suspects arrived in a vehicle near King Street West and Blue Jays Way on the morning of Sept. 4, and one suspect entered a business and allegedly stole a point-of-sale machine before fleeing.

On Thursday, police released images of one suspect described as having a medium build. He was last seen wearing blue ripped jeans, a New York Yankees baseball hat, a dark-coloured hoodie and white shoes. Police do not have a description of the second suspect, who remained in the vehicle during the theft. They also released images of the suspect vehicle, believed to be a silver Mercedes-Benz with front wheels appearing different from the rear wheels and a front plate cover obscuring the license plate.

6. Ajax construction company owner charged after $56K project left unfinished

A construction company owner has been arrested and charged in connection with a fraud investigation in Ajax after the victim paid over $50,000 for a home construction project that was never finished. Durham Regional Police say the victim paid Aria Build Corp. $56,560 in August 2024 to complete construction of a residence and enroll the property in a Tarion Warranty program.

The victim dealt directly with the company's owner, and the money was deposited into a bank account associated with the company. As construction progressed, a dispute arose over the payment schedule and completion of the work, prompting the company to stop work. The victim later learned the property had never been enrolled in the warranty program. Behzad Ayon, 30, owner of Aria Build Corp., has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Police believe there may be additional victims.

8. OSAP pause affects private institutions, including National Ballet School and divinity colleges

A recent pause on financial assistance payments to private post-secondary institutions in Ontario is affecting divinity schools, Canada's National Ballet School and many others, with students feeling unfairly swept up in the policy. Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn announced last week that the province had tasked KPMG with auditing Ontario Student Assistance Program usage at career colleges, and referred the matter to the Ontario Provincial Police. While the audit is ongoing, OSAP payments to private post-secondary institutions would be paused.

Quinn said he is "working on" securing low-interest loans for affected students, but has not indicated a timeline. The pause affects all private post-secondary institutions, including private universities, chiropractic and naturopathic medicine colleges, and performing arts schools such as Canada's National Ballet School. Executive director John Dalrymple said about half of the affected ballet school students rely on that aid to pay tuition. Data obtained by The Canadian Press showed the seven career colleges with the highest OSAP usage in 2024-25 received $385 million in provincial grants.

9. 3 dead, 19 injured in bus fire in northeast Calgary

Three people are dead and 19 injured after a vehicle fire in northeast Calgary on Thursday, which police say involved two city buses and six other vehicles. Officers responded to the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E. just after 1 p.m. for reports of a vehicle fire.

10. Investigation into fatal Saskatchewan crash that killed two now complete: RCMP

The investigation into the crash that led to the deaths of Jayden Dalke and Bhishma Rajyaguru near Lumsden earlier this year is now complete, according to RCMP. In a "final update" issued Thursday afternoon, Saskatchewan RCMP announced that investigators with its collision reconstruction unit had concluded their investigation. After consulting with the victims' families and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, police said any further disclosure will be limited, as there will be no court process given both drivers were killed.

The service reiterated that a silver SUV driven by Dalke was travelling northbound in the southbound lane before it collided with a black SUV driven by Rajyaguru on Highway 11 near Lumsden on July 18. Responding officers found alcohol and cannabis in the silver SUV, while none was found in the black SUV, and Dalke's vehicle had left a gas station without paying about a half-hour before crashing. RCMP said investigators "will never have the opportunity" to speak with either vehicle occupant.
