1. China's CXMT Achieves World's First LPDDR6 Mass Production

On August 29, CXMT (Changxin Memory Technologies) officially announced that its self-developed next-generation low-power memory, LPDDR6, has entered mass production, and will first ship in the Xiaomi 18 Fold flagship foldable phone.

This marks the world's first commercial deployment of LPDDR6 and the first time a Chinese memory maker has broken foreign firms' long-standing monopoly on leading-edge memory standards. According to CXMT's semi-annual report, the chip delivers a peak data rate of 12,800 Mbps and up to 16GB capacity.

LPDDR6 is the latest international low-power memory standard, first released by JEDEC in July 2025. Amid surging AI demand, LPDDR6 is seen as a key pillar of on-device AI computing, spanning smartphones, PCs, smart cockpits and AI data centers.

2. OpenAI Cuts Off Cursor After SpaceX Acquisition, Drawing Musk's Ire

OpenAI has announced it will stop providing its AI models to the coding tool Cursor, planning to close Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models on November 12, 2026, with future new models (including Astra) no longer offered to Cursor.

The move comes just two weeks after SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor's parent company Anysphere. OpenAI explained it cannot be confident SpaceX will use its technology under the terms of service, citing past contract violations by Elon Musk's companies. Musk responded on X saying "I don't care at all," while attacking OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman.

Claude is currently the most popular model on the Cursor platform. Hours after OpenAI's announcement, Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said the company would add compute capacity to support the Claude model on Cursor.

3. Weibo CEO Slams Manus AI Agent

Weibo CEO Wang Gaofei (known by the handle "来去之间") publicly criticized the once-hot AI agent Manus, saying he regrets buying an annual large-model subscription.

Wang wrote that Manus still has tens of thousands of credits left but its capability is terrible — the same task his company's internal tool finished in half an hour took Manus three hours with a pile of bugs, requiring constant instruction fixes.

Manus is a general AI agent designed to autonomously break down complex tasks. Industry insiders noted the AI agent sector is still in its early stage, and annual subscriptions carry higher risk, with monthly payment being more flexible.

4. China Drafts Law to Assign Liability for Autonomous Driving

The draft revision to China's Road Traffic Safety Law has been submitted for first review at the 24th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress, establishing a special chapter on autonomous vehicles that clarifies the boundary between autonomous driving and assisted driving and assigns liability.

The draft states that when an autonomous vehicle commits a traffic violation while its autonomous function is activated, the manufacturer or importer bears responsibility — meaning when L3 conditional autonomy is active, the carmaker, not the driver, takes the blame.

According to MIIT data, L2 assisted-driving passenger cars have reached a 70.5% penetration rate this year, and NOA 34.2%. Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the CPCA, said automakers can no longer play word games: safety compliance is required to launch, and clear liability is required to sell.

5. AMD Launches ROCm 10 With 3.3x Inference Boost

AMD has officially launched ROCm 10, its new-generation open-source AI and GPU computing software platform, skipping ROCm 8 and ROCm 9 to jump from ROCm 7.14 directly to the tenth generation.

The highlight is the ROCm.AI platform, which integrates AMD Skills, ROCm CLI and ROCm Hyperloom, and connects with mainstream coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor to help developers write AMD-optimized code. Windows now adopts a unified ROCm Core SDK, easing cross-platform development.

On a test platform with eight Instinct MI355X accelerators, ROCm 10 with ROCm.AI delivered on average 3.3x higher inference performance and 2.4x higher training performance versus ROCm 7, and natively supports the Strix Halo mobile APU.

6. Huawei's HarmonyOS Ecosystem Tops 80 Million Devices

At the HarmonyOS Ecosystem Conference 2026 on August 28, Huawei rotating chairman Xu Zhijun said the HarmonyOS ecosystem has taken initial shape, with over 100,000 native apps and more than 400,000 apps available on HarmonyOS phones.

Xu noted that Huawei phones returned to the No.1 spot in China's smartphone shipment market share in 2026. As of August 20, 2026, devices running HarmonyOS 6 surpassed 80 million, expected to top 100 million within the fourth quarter.

He said this was achieved with Huawei's new products fully equipped with domestic chips and HarmonyOS — "changing the engine mid-flight without losing altitude or speed." Xu said HarmonyOS still faces two tests: seizing the AI-era opportunity and going global.

7. Xiaomi 18 Fold Price Leaks With Xuanjie O3 Chip

The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be officially unveiled in early September, with a formal announcement expected next week and blind pre-orders already open. Several bloggers predict a price around RMB 12,000, roughly on par with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8's starting price of RMB 12,999.

As Xiaomi's first wide-body foldable, the 18 Fold has a wider inner screen ratio that reduces black bars in landscape video and offers more usable space for split-screen work, with the HyperOS 4 deeply adapted for the wide screen.

Its Xuanjie O3 chip uses a 10-core all-big-core architecture, with multi-core scores topping 15,000 for the first time, a 60% gain over the previous generation. It is also the world's first mobile processor to support LPDDR6 memory, with up to 113.8 GB/s bandwidth.

8. Unitree Robot Injures Girl; Parties Reach Settlement

A girl was recently hit in the face by a robot at a science museum in Xiangyang, Hubei province, knocking out several teeth and sparking widespread discussion. On August 28, local authorities said the robot was undergoing a test rehearsal and the parties involved have reached a settlement.

The museum's operator, Hefei Anda Chuangzhan Technology, said compensation details would not be disclosed and that the robot is a Unitree brand. On November 12, 2025, the girl was visiting the museum with her kindergarten when the robot suddenly lifted its leg and struck her face.

Local authorities said staff failed to accurately judge the safe distance during the test, causing the injury. After the incident, the museum said it would comprehensively review and address safety risks.

9. iPhone 18 Pro Pre-Orders Delayed to Avoid Sept. 11 Anniversary

Apple's fall event is set for Wednesday, September 9 local time (early morning September 10 Beijing time). By convention, new phones open for pre-order on the Friday after the event, which would fall on September 11 this year.

But with this year marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Apple is reported to break convention and push pre-orders to Saturday, September 12. It did the same in 2015 for the iPhone 6S series.

The change covers the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4. Apple's first foldable iPhone Ultra will open pre-orders in late September on a staggered schedule, and no standard iPhone 18 will launch this September.

10. NASA's Roman Space Telescope Set to Launch Sunday

The Nancy Grace Roman space telescope, a $4.3 billion mission that survived two rounds of proposed White House budget cuts, is set to lift off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on Sunday morning (7:26am ET), opening the next stage of NASA's quest to unlock the secrets of the universe.

Searching chiefly for exoplanets and clues about planetary formation, Roman will join the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. Its 300-megapixel infrared camera offers the same sharpness as Hubble but a field of view at least 100 times larger.

Roman is named after NASA's first chief of astronomy, Nancy Grace Roman, who died in 2018. Its destination is Lagrange point 2, about one million miles from Earth, where it will operate in the same sun-Earth orbit as Webb.
