1. NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches Today

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to lift off at 7:26 a.m. EDT (1126 GMT) today, August 30, from Launch Complex-39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, riding atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. SpaceX is currently fueling the rocket's first stage and side boosters with RP-1 propellant and liquid oxygen.

Cloudy weather had pushed the launch probability down to 50% yesterday, but conditions have improved this morning to 70% "go." Roman is bound for the Earth-Sun Lagrange point 2 (L2), roughly 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth, where it will remain in a stable orbit.

The telescope is NASA's next great observatory, tasked with studying dark energy, searching for exoplanets and investigating the physics of distant stars.

2. Musk Slams Altman as an "Utterly Untrustworthy Scumbag"

3. Tencent Releases Open-Source Hy4 Preview Model

Tencent released its next-generation AI language model, Hy4 preview, on August 28 and opened up the model weights. The model has 770 billion parameters and supports a 1-million-token context window, a major jump in scale and data-processing capability over its predecessor.

In a blind test of 203 engineering tasks conducted by 163 internal experts, Hy4 preview scored an average of 2.99/4.00, slightly ahead of Zhipu's GLM 5.3 (2.92) and Moonshot's K3 (2.94). According to Bloomberg, Hy4 preview traded wins and losses with rivals such as Alibaba's Qwen 3.8 Max in third-party benchmarks.

On pricing, Hy4 preview stays cost-effective at 6 yuan per million input tokens, 18 yuan per million output tokens and 0.3 yuan on cache hits, and is available on Tencent Cloud TokenHub and OpenRouter.

4. World First: AI Assists Surgeons in Real-Time Brain Surgery

On August 27, University College London Hospitals (UCLH) announced that AI had, for the first time, read endoscopic footage in real time during a pituitary tumor removal, identifying hidden blood vessels and nerves and outlining a safe resection area. It marks AI's move from pre-surgery advisor to in-surgery assistant.

The patient was 48-year-old Briton Rhys Hibbert, who suffered his first seizure in December 2024 and was found to have an 11-mm tumor on his pituitary gland. Lead surgeon Hani Marcus noted the biggest risk in pituitary surgery is damaging the artery — a 1-mm slip of the scalpel can mean blindness, stroke or death.

The system was developed by UCL's Hawkes Institute and runs on NVIDIA's Clara IGX platform. A November 2024 study in npj Digital Medicine found AI raised doctors' accuracy in identifying the safe area from 70.7% to 77.5%, with junior doctors benefiting most. The patient has fully recovered with markedly improved vision.

Enflame Technology, along with Moore Threads, MetaX and Biren Technology, is known as one of China's "four GPU dragons." Since its founding in 2018, Enflame has independently developed five cloud AI chips across four generations of architecture.

Enflame plans to raise 6 billion yuan in its IPO to fund R&D and industrialization of its fifth- and sixth-generation AI chips. The company has yet to turn a profit: revenue was 301 million, 722 million and 990 million yuan from 2023 to 2025, with 1.12 billion yuan in the first half of 2026.

10. U.S. Drafts Rules to Block Chinese AI Firms from Remote Compute Access

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing a new AI export-control rule that would, for the first time, extend controls from physical chips to remote compute access — closing a "back door" through which Chinese firms rent computing power from NVIDIA and other U.S. advanced AI chips via data centers in third countries like Thailand and Singapore.

The rule is being drafted by a small team inside the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), directly targeting Chinese AI companies such as Moonshot AI and DeepSeek. If enacted, it would be the first U.S. policy combining chip export restrictions with curbs on China's AI development.

The rule is still in draft, with BIS planning to seek comment from AI companies and industry groups as early as September. Its fate is uncertain — in March, BIS floated a regulatory draft that was withdrawn within about a week after strong industry backlash.
