278 pieces, ages 7+. The centrepiece is the buildable Standard Kart, which has real drifting action and a working shell launcher for taking out the Bob-omb and Thwomp figures. You also get an Item Box, a starting area, a winner's circle, 3 connectible track barriers and 2 traffic cones — and it combines with other LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart sets to build out a longer track.

The interactive LEGO Mario figure is what makes it more than a shelf piece: drop him in the kart to trigger Mario Kart sound and visual effects, and he reacts to the red and green plates. Kids can earn digital rewards from the Item Box and keep playing long after the build is done.

It also works as room decor — the Standard Kart is one of the most recognizable vehicles in the game. Building instructions are in the LEGO Super Mario app.

A dependable birthday or holiday gift for a kid who loves Mario Kart and LEGO.
