The whole point of Twistables is that you never sharpen them. When the tip wears down, just twist the barrel and more colour comes up — no sharpener, no pencil shavings all over the table. The clear case lets you see how much colour is left, and the leads are less prone to breaking than standard pencils.

The 50-piece set includes 20 brand-new colours, enough for school projects, colouring books and greeting cards. Round barrels work for both left- and right-handed kids, and the non-toxic formula is rated for ages 4 and up. It's the kind of basic art supply that lasts a whole school term.

It ranks #16 in Kids' Pencil Crayons, with 4.6 stars from nearly 35,000 reviews — a safe pick. At $24.19 that's under 50 cents per pencil.
