Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas — colorless and odorless — that seeps up from basements, drains and crawl spaces. Long-term exposure is a leading cause of lung cancer, and you can't see or smell it, so testing is the only way to know.

The RD1 is a simple one-time test: leave the sampler in place for two to four days, then mail it to the lab, which emails results within 72 hours of receipt. The price includes the test materials and lab fees (excluding NJ state fees). It's listed under the EPA Radon Gas Measurement Proficiency Program, and positive results come with recommendations and next steps. It holds 4.2 stars across 10,000+ reviews, making it one of the more trusted home test kits in this category.

One thing to know up front: the lab is in the United States and the kit is recommended for use only within the United States. If you're in Canada, confirm before buying whether you can mail the sample to the US lab and whether the results will be recognized locally.
