The worst thing about TV speakers isn't the missing bass, it's that you can't hear people talking. This 3.1 setup has a dedicated centre channel for dialogue, so news, dramas and talk shows stop requiring volume cranked to guess at lines. Paired with a BRAVIA TV it also unlocks Voice Zoom 3, which uses AI to isolate voices.

The subwoofer is a big wireless box with a 160mm driver and 250W of system power — it sits next to the couch with no cable run to worry about.

One thing to be clear about: there are no rear speakers here. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are supported, but the overhead and behind-you effects are simulated by Sony's Vertical Surround Engine and S-Force Pro from the front drivers. It's well short of a real 5.1.2 layout and well ahead of TV speakers — don't read "Atmos" as speakers in your ceiling.
