SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 4TB SSD — 3,000MB/s Over Thunderbolt 3! $1,268.28 CAD (19% Off)

Amazon.ca currently has the SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 4TB portable SSD at $1,268.28 CAD, down from a $1,565.99 list price — 19% off. Prime members ship free; otherwise orders over $35 CAD ship free.

Thunderbolt 3 is the whole point here: 3,000MB/s read and 2,500MB/s write over a 40Gbps link, which SanDisk rates at 50GB in a minute or less. For multi-track 4K editing or dumping a full day of card footage, that's a different class of experience from a regular USB drive.

The catch is the dual-mode interface. You only get full speed on Thunderbolt 3 — or a USB4 port, which M-series Macs have. Switch to plain USB-C at 10Gbps and you drop to around 1,000MB/s. If you're planning to run this off a USB-A adapter, you're paying for speed you won't see.

The ruggedising is aimed at field work: IP68 dust and water resistance, 4,000lb crush resistance, and a 3-metre drop rating on a carpeted concrete floor. The aluminium enclosure doubles as a heatsink so sustained transfers are less likely to throttle. At 122 grams it disappears into a camera bag side pocket. A Thunderbolt 3 cable is in the box, and the warranty runs five years.

1,084 ratings at 4.0 stars isn't a rave review average for a flagship portable SSD. But 4TB with Thunderbolt 3 speeds and IP68 in one enclosure is a narrow field — there simply aren't many options. Pro-grade drives at this capacity rarely see deep discounts, so 19% is a reasonable entry point if you're outfitting an editing workflow.
