On Sunday night in Los Angeles, the Atlanta Braves beat the Dodgers 3-2 to level the National League Division Series at 1-1. The turning point came in the fifth inning, when Dodgers lefty Kris Bubic lost control of a sweeper that skipped off catcher Will Smith's glove for a wild pitch, allowing Michael Harris II - who had reached third on a line drive off the left-field wall - to score standing up. The Dodgers trailed for the final five innings.

Two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell didn't make it out of the fourth for the Dodgers, exiting after 90 pitches and five walks. Atlanta used six pitchers, with right-hander Didier Fuentes going 3 2/3 innings after opener Ray Kerr. The Dodgers briefly tied it on Freddie Freeman's solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, and Max Muncy added a home run with two outs in the ninth.

Afterward Freeman said both teams are very good and the pitching was excellent, adding that the Dodgers must overcome their reliance on home runs if they want to improve their chances of beating the Braves.

2. Rays edge Yankees 1-0 as Rasmussen flirts with no-hitter

Source: Sportsnet

On Saturday night in St. Petersburg, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 1-0 in Game 1 of the AL Division Series. Rays starter Drew Rasmussen retired 15 consecutive batters and took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, finishing with a one-hitter and 10 strikeouts.

The Yankees' first hit came with two outs in the eighth, when catcher Austin Wells ran through a stop sign and was thrown out by a wide margin trying to stretch a double into a triple - shortstop Taylor Walls relayed to third baseman Junior Caminero. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it a bad decision. Closer Bryan Baker pitched a perfect ninth to seal it.

The Yankees lost a 1-0 postseason game for the first time since the 1963 World Series. Gerrit Cole made his first postseason start since Tommy John surgery in March 2025, allowing five hits over five innings and Jonathan Aranda's solo homer in the third. Giancarlo Stanton struck out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, his first plate appearance since April 24.

5. Senators beat Maple Leafs 3-2 in Chabot's captain debut

Source: The Globe and Mail

On Saturday night in Toronto, the Ottawa Senators beat the Maple Leafs 3-2. It was Thomas Chabot's first game as captain, and he delivered a goal and an assist. Ottawa was the last team to open its season, having watched the rest of the league get started.

The win was tempered by the loss of No. 1 defenceman Jake Sanderson, who left in the first period after re-aggravating a lower-body injury. Coach Travis Green said more would be known in a few days. Stephen Halliday scored the winner just as a power play expired in the third, and goalie Linus Ullmark made 27 saves.

Brady Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers in June after demanding a trade, ushering in Ottawa's post-Tkachuk era. The game was also Green's 500th behind an NHL bench. Maple Leafs associate coach Daniel Alfredsson faced his former team for the first time; he spent 17 of his 18 NHL seasons with the Senators.

On Saturday night, the Montreal Alouettes routed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-10 at home to clinch first place in the CFL East Division. It was the Alouettes' first sellout crowd of the season and marked the club's 80th anniversary, with legends such as Mike Pringle, Ben Cahoon, Jamel Richardson, Marc Trestman and Jim Popp on hand to be honoured at halftime.

Canadian receiver Tyson Philpot made history: he first passed Ben Cahoon and Jamel Richardson (both 112 catches) for the Alouettes' single-season receptions record, then on the same 46-yard catch broke Terry Evanshen's record for most receiving yards by a Canadian in a CFL season, before hauling in his 117th catch to pass Brad Sinopoli for the most single-season receptions by a Canadian receiver in CFL history. He finished with 11 catches for 207 yards.

Quarterback Davis Alexander completed 30 of 40 passes for 440 yards and a touchdown, easing the memory of an earlier loss in Winnipeg. Montreal finished with 30 first downs to Winnipeg's 13, and Bombers running back Brady Oliveira was limited to 44 rushing yards. The Alouettes host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 12.

9. Verstappen wins rain-hit Malaysia race to end drought

Source: Sportsnet

On Sunday, the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix was held at Malaysia's Sepang circuit, where Red Bull's Max Verstappen won to end a nearly year-long victory drought. Torrential rain and software issues delayed the start by one hour and 45 minutes.

Verstappen started from pole but dropped to third before retaking the lead on Lap 13 after a safety-car restart, then led the rest of the 55-lap race. It was his 72nd career win, matching Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher for wins with a single team; both trail Lewis Hamilton, who has 84 with Mercedes. It was also Red Bull's first win since partnering with Ford. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli finished second and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton third.

Mercedes' George Russell retired late with a suspected power-unit issue, extending teammate Antonelli's lead to 84 points. Separately, the 45-year-old Fernando Alonso re-signed with Aston Martin for an unprecedented 24th season. The season is set to end with Qatar on Nov. 29 and Abu Dhabi on Dec. 6.
