1. Two suspects at large after shots fired at a Markham home

A home in Markham was struck by gunfire overnight, and police are now searching for two suspects. Investigators say two suspects were seen getting out of a white car before shooting at the house.

Police confirmed no one was injured in the shooting. The two suspects remain at large, and officers are urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring those responsible into custody.

2. Two stabbed in late-night attack outside a bar in Toronto's west end

Two men were stabbed outside a bar in Toronto's west end. Police say the attack happened at about 2:30 a.m. near Dufferin and St. Clair.

Police are looking for as many as four suspects, who fled the scene in a red car. The circumstances of the case remain under investigation.

3. Six hospitalized after vehicle driven into crowd at Quebec festival

A vehicle was driven into crowds at the Festival Western in Saint-Tite, Que., injuring six people. Police say the incident happened early Saturday, when officers received a 911 call at about 4:30 a.m. reporting that a vehicle had driven into festivalgoers on St-Joseph Blvd. in the Mauricie region.

Quebec provincial police, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), told CTV News that the six people — four men and two women — were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, a man in his 20s, fled when police arrived; officers pursued him and arrested him in Quebec City. Police said preliminary findings indicate the incident was not premeditated, that alcohol has been ruled out, and that investigators will continue to interview the man.

St-Joseph Blvd. between du Couvent and du Moulin streets is closed to vehicles today. The festival's director of communications said in a statement that today's activities will proceed as scheduled and offered sympathies to those involved and their families. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette visited the festival that afternoon and thanked police for their prompt response. Several other Quebec politicians — including Public Safety Minister Ian Lafrenière, Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Conservative Party leader Éric Duhaime, Québec Solidaire co-leader Ruba Ghazal and Liberal Party leader Charles Milliard — also responded on social media.

4. Police search for elderly man missing along the Humber River

Toronto police are searching for an elderly man who has gone missing along the Humber River. The missing man is 78-year-old David, who was last seen on Sept. 10 entering the Humber River in an inflatable kayak.

He has not been seen since. Police are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact them.

5. Police seek two suspects after fake-gold-chain robbery in Scarborough

Toronto police are searching for two suspects in an alleged Scarborough robbery in which a fake gold chain was used to snatch a victim's own chain. In a news release, officers say they were called to the area of Ellesmere Road and Midland Avenue at about 11 a.m. on June 26.

Police allege the victim was walking through the parking lot of a commercial building when a woman called out from her vehicle asking for directions. A man then drove into the lot beside the victim and also asked for directions. Police say the woman got out of her vehicle and placed a fake gold chain around the victim's neck, and in doing so ripped off the victim's personal chain.

Surveillance video released by investigators shows the suspects fleeing in separate vehicles with the victim chasing after them. Investigators have identified the female suspect as 23-year-old Andreea Ispas of Toronto, who is wanted for robbery. She is described as about five-foot-five with a slim build and black hair, and was last seen wearing a black dress with white trim and white shoes. The male suspect has not yet been identified, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

6. Kyle Lowry presented with the Key to the City

Kyle Lowry, who spent nine seasons with the Raptors and helped the team win its first NBA Championship, has received the key to the city of Toronto. Mayor Olivia Chow presented the Key to the City to Lowry on Saturday during "Kyle's Block Party" at Maple Leaf Square.

Lowry retired as a Raptor this past summer, and his No. 7 jersey will be retired in January during a special ceremony at Scotiabank Arena. In a statement, Chow said Lowry gave Toronto more than unforgettable moments on the court — "he gave our city his heart" — calling him the "Greatest Raptor of All Time" and saying it was an honour to present him with the key.

Hundreds of fans gathered at Maple Leaf Square, also known as "Jurassic Park," for the free event, which featured exclusive merchandise pop-ups, giveaways, and food and beverage stations. Lowry has been widely regarded as the "GROAT," or Greatest Raptor of All Time, and remains the franchise's all-time leader in assists, steals and three-point field goals made. He will become the second player in Raptors history to have his number retired, joining Vince Carter, whose No. 15 was raised to the rafters at Scotiabank Arena in November 2024.

7. Second suspect wanted in 71 vehicle break-ins in Mississauga

Police are searching for a second suspect after 71 vehicle break-ins in Mississauga earlier this month. Police said Saturday that the "large-scale break-in spree" occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 3 and 6 throughout a number of neighbourhoods.

Police say vehicles were unlawfully entered, either by smashing windows or taking advantage of unlocked doors, and that valuables were stolen. They noted that no vehicles were stolen and that all were unoccupied during the incidents.

In a news release Saturday, police said 33-year-old Andrea Cederberg of no fixed address is wanted for 23 counts of attempt to commit an indictable offence, nine counts of mischief over $5,000, nine counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of theft over $5,000. The incidents involving Cederberg are connected to the arrest earlier this week of 34-year-old Cory Lowden, who is facing more than 78 charges. Police said they have identified potential connections to similar incidents in Toronto, Halton, York and Waterloo regions, and continue to work with policing partners across the Greater Toronto Area to determine the full scope of the alleged activities.

8. Murder charges laid more than 7 years after innocent man shot in Kamloops, B.C.

More than seven years after an innocent man was gunned down in a Kamloops, B.C., hotel, two men have been charged with his murder. Hugh Alexander McIntosh, 58, and Brandon Dale Fiddick, 34, have been jointly charged with second-degree murder in the January 2019 shooting of Rex Gill.

Kamloops RCMP said in a news release Saturday that Gill was one of two men fatally shot at hotels in the city in the span of approximately 90 minutes on Jan. 23, 2019. The other man killed that day was Cody Mathieu; police did not say whether any charges have been laid in connection with Mathieu's death. Police said investigators believe the two shootings were directly linked, and that the investigations were subsequently combined under a major investigation led by the Kamloops RCMP Serious Crime Unit.

Police have previously said they believe the killings were targeted and gang-related, but that Gill, a Penticton resident, was not known to police and that his killing may have been a case of mistaken identity. In Saturday's release, Mounties confirmed their investigation concluded Gill "was not known to the accused or associated with any criminal activity." McIntosh and Fiddick were arrested Saturday and held in custody. Supt. Jeff Pelley, the officer in charge of the Kamloops detachment, described the arrests and charges as "a tremendous accomplishment" and said the horrific event had a profound impact on the victim's family and the community — and that, most importantly, there is an opportunity for some resolution for those affected.

9. 'Why walk away?': Emotional Danielle Smith speaks against separation

In Calgary, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith held back tears Saturday as she spoke at a virtual assembly discussing Alberta's future in Canada. She was the opening speaker at the event, co-hosted by former Opposition leader Preston Manning and former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell, laying out the reasons for a sovereign Alberta to stay within a united Canada.

Smith said a lot of Albertans are angry, and some are more than angry — they're hurt. "I hear it at town halls, in coffee shops, at hockey rinks and in my email inbox," she said before choking up. After pausing, she spoke about the impacts on Albertans, including a farmer who felt pressured and a young family who did everything right but still can't see how they can afford a home. She called the referendum earlier this year for Oct. 19, including a question on whether Alberta should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on starting the legal process to separate.

Smith said western frustration with Ottawa is nothing new and has felt particularly acute over the past 10 years. She said that even with polls suggesting the remain-in-Canada vote will win, the number voting for separation is "too high for comfort." She noted that new Prime Minister Mark Carney has acted constructively with Alberta on an energy agreement and toward a new West Coast pipeline, asking, "Why walk away from the table when we're finally winning at it?" The Opposition NDP, however, has criticized Smith for inflating and legitimizing the grievances of a small sliver of discontented Albertans to mollify hardline separatists in her United Conservative party.

10. Basking shark sighting draws a crowd in Bedford, N.S.

An unusual sight drew quite the crowd Friday night in Bedford, N.S. A basking shark was spotted swimming near the Bedford Basin Yacht Club. Olivia Falkenham was on her way to work at the yacht club when she noticed lots of people pulled over, pointing and filming something.

She said she saw a big fin come out of the water, so she pulled over and ran to see what was happening, and took a video. "I went up on the balcony and was watching to see if I could see it again and then I saw it come right up under the docks," she said. What shocked her most was the size of the creature. "It was huge. It's really cool. I've never seen anything like that, especially as close as it was and the size that it was."

Gary Cowan decided to drive down after hearing about the possible shark nearby. He said he often goes out on the water and likes to fish, and has never seen anything like it in his life. The Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) told CTV News the basking shark was freely swimming and in good condition. MARS said basking sharks are filter feeders and tend to spend time at the surface, and that officials monitored it Friday night to ensure it was behaving normally. It said there have been no reports of the animal in the harbour as of Saturday.
