1. Ovechkin Announces This Will Be His Final NHL Season

Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin announced that the 2026-27 season will be his last in the NHL. He informed his teammates in the locker room before the club released a statement. "I know in my heart it's the right decision," Ovechkin said. He added that it was important to make the announcement before the team's first home game, so he could thank everyone who has been important to him and his family.

Ovechkin, who turned 41 in September, is embarking on his 22nd season. A three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner and 12-time All-Star, his 929 goals are the most in NHL history, while his 759 assists trail only Nicklas Backstrom by three for Washington's franchise mark. He and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby are defining stars of their era. The two will meet three more times this season, on Jan. 18, March 13 and April 4 — the last being Washington's final home game.

The Capitals won their opener 5-2 over Carolina before losing 3-1 to Tampa Bay on Saturday. They host Crosby and the Penguins next. Ovechkin's farewell tour is set to add extra significance to Washington's playoff push.

2. Rays Beat Yankees 5-2 to Take 2-0 Series Lead

Source: Sportsnet

In St. Petersburg on Monday night, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 5-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series. Richie Palacios hit a two-run single in a four-run fifth inning. Rays starter Freddy Peralta allowed one run and three hits in 4 2/3 innings, and the bullpen held firm.

The Yankees committed three errors in the first inning, becoming the first team to do so in the opening inning of a postseason game since the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the 1975 AL Championship Series. Ben Rice homered twice for New York, but the team has scored just two runs in two playoff games with three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge out of the lineup due to a calf injury. Manager Aaron Boone said his team has to win: "We've got to play the first inning of Game 3."

The loss leaves the Yankees on the verge of elimination, which would extend their drought without a World Series championship to 17 seasons. Game 3 is Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. Tampa Bay needs one more win to reach the AL Championship Series. A crowd of 40,226, mostly Rays fans, looked on.

3. White Sox Rally Past Guardians 4-3 for 2-0 Lead

Source: Sportsnet

In Cleveland on Monday, the Chicago White Sox rallied past the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series. Braden Montgomery lined a two-run double down the right-field line in the sixth inning for the go-ahead runs, after Munetaka Murakami drove in a run in the fourth and Chase Meidroth added another.

Reliever Sean Burke was the difference, allowing one hit in 5 1/3 innings while retiring 13 straight batters, with six strikeouts. Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out 11, tied for second-most by a Cleveland pitcher in a postseason game, but the offence has now gone quiet for two straight games.

The White Sox return to Chicago one win from reaching the AL Championship Series for the first time since winning the World Series in 2005. Game 3 is Wednesday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, giving Chicago two chances to clinch a postseason series at home — something it hasn't done since 1906.

4. NFL Suspends Two Officials, One Game and Two Games

Source: CBS News

The NFL on Monday suspended referee Adrian Hill one game for unprofessional conduct. During Sunday's game between the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins, Hill was knocked over in a collision and yelled at Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson, pointing for him to get away, when Wilson tried to help him to his feet. Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell called it "a high-energy moment" and said he had no major concerns. Minnesota won 15-10.

The league also suspended line judge Jeff Seeman two games for swearing at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. Seeman was caught on camera cursing at McBride during the Cardinals' loss to the New York Giants. JC Tretter, the NFL Players Association's executive director and a retired offensive lineman, criticized the conduct, saying "this kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable" and that players are held accountable when roles are reversed. The league's vice president of officiating, Ramon George, issued the suspensions.

5. Man City Rivals Want Heavy Punishment After Guilty Verdict

Source: Sky Sports

After an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules, City have lodged their appeal. The commission concluded there were more than 100 breaches, and that more than £830m of owner funding was used to inflate revenues, allowing the club to comply with Premier League and UEFA rules through a series of "sham" arrangements. City insist they are innocent, saying "a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists" to support their position.

Rival clubs believe a points deduction is not sufficient if it would mean City spending just one season outside the top flight. The sanctions hearing is expected before Christmas as City's legal team prepares for the appeal and penalty stages.

Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher has urged that any punishment be "done this season", and believes it "should go on for years and years". He said that if City went on to win the title this season, given what is known, "the title to be won would be a sham".

6. Messi Plays His Final Match for Argentina

Source: Billboard

Lionel Messi takes the pitch for the final time as captain of the Argentina men's national team on Tuesday, facing Benin at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires in a match billed as "The Last Tango". Kickoff is at 8 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET). Organizers say all 85,000 seats have sold out, with thousands more fans expected to pack the surrounding streets to bid farewell to the legend.

Messi, 39, is Argentina's all-time leader in caps and goals. He led the team to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar and only narrowly missed a repeat this year, losing to Spain in the 2026 final. After this match he will no longer play for Argentina, and 28-year-old Cristian "Cuti" Romero will take over as captain.

Messi's club career will continue with Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.

7. Canada Coach Jesse Marsch Not Shy Ahead of U.S. Friendly

Source: CBC

Canada men's national team head coach Jesse Marsch admits he says things people may dislike. "Look, I'm American. But I'm honoured and really proud to be the Canadian national team coach," he said Monday. He added that he is not afraid to say what he thinks needs to be said, even if he crosses the line sometimes.

Marsch raised ire this week with comments about American mentality in a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian, saying Americans are "inundated with propaganda" from a young age and "feel like we deserve to be treated differently because we're Americans". Canada faces the U.S. in a friendly in St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, with an ongoing trade war between the two nations in the background. Marsch said the rivalry is "better than it's ever been".

Canada sits 27th in the FIFA world rankings; the U.S. is 16th. Canada beat Chile 1-0 and then blanked Peru 2-0 in Montreal on Saturday. The teams last met in March 2025, when Canada won 2-1. Both were host nations at this summer's World Cup and both were ousted in the round of 16.

8. Stutzle's Two Goals Lift Senators Past Bruins 4-1

Source: NHL.com

At TD Garden in Boston on Monday, Tim Stutzle scored two first-period goals and added an assist as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1. Michael Amadio had a goal and an assist, and Drake Batherson also scored as Ottawa improved to 2-0-0.

Stutzle scored twice in a span of 1:43. His first was a short-handed goal; his second came on a rush three seconds after a Boston power play expired. "Right from the drop of the puck we came ready to play," Amadio said. "It was a good 60 minutes from our team."

Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark made 10 saves through two periods but was removed as a precaution in the third after a collision with Bruins forward JJ Peterka. Samuel Ersson, acquired from Toronto on June 26, made eight saves in his Senators debut. James Hagens scored for Boston, and Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves. The Bruins went 0-for-4 on the power play and are 0-for-10 this season. Stutzle's 151st goal made him the fourth German player to reach 150.

9. Maple Leafs Not Worried About McKenna's Quiet Start

Source: Toronto Sun

Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, has no points in his first three games. The 18-year-old rookie heads into his fourth NHL game Tuesday night when the Leafs host the Nashville Predators, averaging 14 minutes 32 seconds of ice time with three shots on goal. He was not made available to media on Monday.

Teammate William Nylander isn't concerned. "There's no pressure to produce," he said. "You know he's going to be a great player. It's going to happen. And when it does, it will come in waves, a lot of waves." Head coach Jim Hiller said McKenna will have to learn when to turn back and when to get the puck to a linemate.

At 164 pounds, McKenna is the second-lightest player in the NHL, heavier only than Montreal's Lane Hutson (162). John Tavares said McKenna's smile and joy have been excellent, adding that it will be "a matter of time before you see him do some things that are pretty special".

10. Flames Off to a Dismal Winless Start

Source: TSN

The Calgary Flames are winless through the first week of the regular season, losing by scores of 6-1, 4-1 and 6-1. Expectations were low to begin with — no team had longer odds to win the Stanley Cup — and this is an organization deep in a rebuild, but even by rebuilding standards the start has been harrowing.

Calgary has scored just three goals in three games (one each from Morgan Frost, Ryan Strome and Matt Coronato), two of them on the power play, meaning just one even-strength goal in 154 minutes of play. Defensively it has been just as ugly, conceding 14 even-strength goals, compared with three for the Seattle Kraken, three for the Boston Bruins and two for the Florida Panthers.

The goaltending hasn't helped either. According to Evolving Hockey, Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley have been 4.6 goals worse than a replacement-level goaltender over the first three games. All three opponents missed the playoffs last season (Seattle twice and Vancouver once), making the situation look even bleaker.
