The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was announced on Wednesday, October 7, in Stockholm. The Nobel Committee for Chemistry said the award goes to Henri B Kagan, of France, and Kensō Soai, of Tokyo University of Science in Japan, for the discovery of nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.
Their discoveries showed how chemical reactions can produce one of two mirror-image forms of a molecule. The two laureates will share equally a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor (about £900,000).

2. Google Releases EmbeddingGemma 2, an On-Device Multimodal Embedding Model
Source: blog.google
Google has released EmbeddingGemma 2, describing it as the most capable model for on-device multimodal embeddings, natively mapping combinations of text, images, audio and video into a unified embedding space. Built on the Gemma 4 architecture and released under the commercially permissive Apache 2.0 license, it has 740 million parameters, making it optimal for on-device inference.
The company said the original EmbeddingGemma launched last year and has passed 20 million downloads. The new model improves code performance by 9.92 points (MTEB Code, from 68.76 to 78.68), making it well-suited for local codebase indexing and semantic search, and sets a new standard in quality-per-parameter across image, video, document and audio modalities.

3. Utah Pilot Lets AI Prescribe Acne Treatments
Source: KSL News
Digital health startup Nolla Health has launched a one-year pilot in Utah that uses artificial intelligence to evaluate patients and recommend prescription acne treatments without an in-person doctor visit. Nolla chief medical advisor Dr. Zaid Fadul said patients pay a $4.99 subscription and upload photos of their face taken in different lighting; the AI analyzes the images, maps the skin and generates a treatment recommendation, which can be sent to the patient or a local pharmacy, with weekly follow-up check-ins.
The pilot runs in stages: for the first 100 patients, physicians review the AI recommendation before it is sent to a pharmacy; for the next roughly 500 patients, doctors review after prescriptions have been issued; beyond that, oversight becomes less rigorous. The company said it tested more than 10,000 cases beforehand. Utah's Office of AI Policy said it will monitor the program through monthly reports.

4. Report: AI Governance's Real Gap Is Accountability, Not Technology
Source: CIO
Many enterprises still govern AI the way they would any other IT rollout, deploying dashboards, instituting policies and conducting periodic reviews, but the real challenge is rethinking workflows and establishing ownership, the article says. Beena Ammanath, executive director of the Global Deloitte AI Institute, said accountability usually breaks down first, because teams deploy AI faster than their organizations can define who owns risk, approvals, monitoring and outcomes.
Deloitte's 2026 State of AI in the Enterprise report found that 84% of surveyed organizations have not adjusted jobs for AI, and only 21% have a mature AI governance framework. The article also cites a 2024 Stanford RegLab study finding that AI-assisted legal research tools from LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters hallucinated between 17% and 33% of the time, and an AI hallucination case database that has logged about 2,041 fabrications, one of which drew nearly $95,000 in sanctions.

5. Global Chip Sales Top $1 Trillion in First Eight Months of 2026

Global semiconductor sales in August rose 8% from July's $147.9 billion and were far above the August 2025 figure of $65.4 billion, marking the 18th consecutive month of growth, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The figures are compiled by World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) and represent a three-month moving average.
By region, year-on-year growth in August was strongest in the Americas (180.9%), followed by Asia Pacific/All Other (143.0%), China (131.3%), Europe (98.5%) and Japan (62.3%). SIA President and CEO Michael Robbins said annual global semiconductor sales have already surpassed $1 trillion through August, reaching this milestone for the first time ever. SIA expects full-year 2026 sales to exceed $1.6 trillion.

6. US Chip Imports and Exports Have Been Rising All Year
Source: Marketplace
Semiconductor exports have climbed steadily all year, and chips were one of the top categories of US goods exports in August, according to the latest Commerce Department trade report; US semiconductor imports also rose, both for the month and year to date. Chips are used in the power grid, data centers and cars — IDC analyst Nina Turner noted that when you press the button to roll up a car window, a semiconductor tells it not to pinch your finger.
IDC estimates about 10% of the world's semiconductors are manufactured in the US, including specialty chips used in cars and communications, plus certain memory chips. Jason Oxman, head of the Information Technology Industry Council, said chip companies have announced billions of dollars in US manufacturing investment in recent years, spurred largely by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act. Chris Miller, author of "Chip War," noted that almost all of the world's leading chip designers are in the US, so much of the profit accrues to the design side rather than manufacturing.

7. Apple Reportedly Partners With LG Electronics to Enter Smart Home Hardware Market
Source: Yahoo Finance
Apple is teaming up with LG Electronics to develop a broad suite of smart home hardware as part of a major initiative to revamp its presence in the connected home market, according to a Bloomberg News report. The lineup includes a video doorbell, a smart thermostat, indoor and outdoor security cameras, a floodlight camera and a smart deadbolt lock; Apple helped direct design and engineering, while the hardware will carry LG's branding, with LG handling manufacturing and ongoing product service.
The partnership uses a strategy Apple has previously employed with companies such as Belkin and Logitech. Filings with the US Federal Communications Commission and certification organization UL Solutions show LG recently sought approval for the lineup, which supports Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with the smart lock also featuring ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for automatic unlocking as a user approaches. Apple is set to launch its own core hardware on Oct. 13, while the LG co-developed accessories are expected to reach shelves several months after Apple's lineup, following regulatory approvals.
8. LG Electronics' Q3 Operating Profit Rises 13.5%
Source: The Korea Times
LG Electronics reported an operating profit of 781.8 billion won ($583 million) for the July-September period, up 13.5% from a year earlier, with sales up 8.9% to 23.82 trillion won, according to a regulatory filing on Wednesday, October 7. The company attributed the growth to solid performance in its home appliance and vehicle solutions businesses and continued expansion of B2B operations, while its TV business also improved profitability.
For the first nine months, LG Electronics' sales reached a record 71.38 trillion won, up 9.2% year on year, and operating profit also hit a record 4.03 trillion won, up 55.9%. The company said it will keep expanding investment in emerging growth areas including cooling solutions for AI data centers and robotics, and is building a robotics data factory in Seoul and actuator production facilities in Changwon.

9. Hang Seng Tech Index Constituents to Increase to 50
Source: ifeng Finance
Hang Seng Indexes Company has announced the consultation results for the Hang Seng Tech Index and will implement six reforms, effective in December. The changes include removing the requirement that eligible candidates belong to one of five designated industries under the Hang Seng Industry Classification System, and consolidating and expanding existing themes while adding a new frontier technology theme.
The revised six tech themes are digital platforms and solutions; artificial intelligence; advanced hardware; robotics and automation; cloud; and frontier technology, with tech sub-themes increasing from 16 to 24. The selection universe will be revised from main-board listed companies to constituents of the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap & MidCap Index, and a two-group selection mechanism based on market-cap ranking and revenue-growth ranking will be introduced. The number of constituents will rise from 30 to 50: the top 40 by market capitalization, plus 10 selected by revenue growth over the past 12 months.

10. Economist: China Leads US in 66 of 74 Key Technologies
Source: Lianhe Zaobao
DBS Bank released its China 2040 Outlook report and held an online briefing on Tuesday, October 6. Ji Mo, managing director and chief China/Hong Kong economist at DBS Hong Kong, said China-US relations are likely to stay relatively stable over the coming year because China holds more leverage, including leading the United States in 66 of 74 key technologies, so Washington will have to make some concessions.
She listed several cards in China's hand: rare earths and other critical materials, its role as a major buyer of agricultural products, its holdings of more than $700 billion in US Treasury debt, and its high-tech, high-end manufacturing supply chain. She noted that in 2003-2007 China led the US in only three of 63 fields, but from 2020 to 2025 it led in 66 of 74. The report also projects China's GDP growth to average about 3% over the next 15 years, down from 4.6% in 2020-2024.
