Tuesday afternoon saw temperatures at Toronto Pearson International Airport hit 36.2°C, just shy of the July 14 record of 36.7°C. More critically, smoke from wildfires burning in northwestern Ontario began drifting south Tuesday evening, blanketing the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario, causing a dramatic deterioration in air quality. Environment Canada has issued both a heat warning and a yellow-level air quality warning, with both alerts expected to remain in effect through at least Thursday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Owsiak said concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from the forest fires have surged to hazardous levels, pushing Toronto's Air Quality Health Index into the high-risk category.
