9. One of World's Largest Uranium Mines Breaks Ground in Northern Saskatchewan

Construction on NexGen Energy's Rook I project officially broke ground Thursday, and once complete the underground uranium mine could become one of the largest in the world.

Located in the Athabasca Basin near Patterson Lake, roughly 150 kilometres north of La Loche, the site sits on the traditional lands of four Indigenous communities. About 300 people work on-site now, with roughly 70 per cent from northern Saskatchewan.

Community leaders say the project will bring hope and prosperity, with construction-phase jobs more than tripling and giving young people opportunities close to home.

10. Canada's Wide World of Roadside Attractions

From coast to coast, Canada is home to more than 1,500 roadside attractions — from giant dinosaurs to oversized apples — that have become economic lifelines for many small towns.

Wayne Smith, Toronto Metropolitan University's hospitality and tourism research director, says the attractions emerged after the Trans-Canada Highway was built, as towns created landmarks to encourage drivers to take a detour and support local economies.

Experts warn that some icons, such as Drumheller's giant dinosaur Tyra, face costly specialty upkeep and may be nearing the end of the road.
