If you have pets, the annoying part of vacuuming is not the floor — it is cutting hair off the brushroll afterwards. The self-cleaning brushroll here pushes long hair and pet hair into the dust cup instead of wrapping it around the roller. With 4.4 stars across nearly 6,000 reviews, that is the feature people keep bringing up.

500W motor, 4.17 kg body, and a 1.2 m wand with advanced swivel steering, so it lies flat enough to slide under sofa legs and beds. LED lights on the nozzle and handheld body show up dust and pet hair in dim corners — useful under furniture where you are working by feel.

Press a button and the wand comes off, turning it into a handheld vacuum. A crevice tool and upholstery tool are included for couch seams, car seats and stairs. The 0.68-quart dust cup is removable and the foam filter is washable, so there are no ongoing consumable costs.

Corded is the trade-off: no battery to run down and no suction fade as the charge drops, but you are dragging a cord and staying within reach of an outlet. For an apartment or a house where you clean one or two floors, that is a good trade. For a three-storey house, cordless is still easier.

Backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Shark's stick models usually sit above $220, so $179.99 is a genuinely decent price.
