Worth Buying: Sonos Era 100 — Real Stereo at This Size, Plus Bluetooth and Line-In! $289 CAD

The Sonos Era 100 in black is $289 on Amazon.ca. Prime members ship free; otherwise free over $35.

To be clear: this isn't a sale price, $289 is the normal going rate. It's worth a write-up because very few speakers at this size and price do actual stereo.

The biggest change from the Sonos One is two angled tweeters firing left and right — the first time Sonos has pulled off real channel separation at this size, so vocals and instruments stop collapsing into a single point in the middle. The woofer is 25% larger than the One's, and at 13 cm it fills a bedroom or study without a sub. The processor is 47% faster, with a separate co-neural processor handling vocals.

Connectivity fixes the old Sonos complaint: WiFi, Bluetooth and 3.5 mm line-in, all three. Previous generations were WiFi-only, which meant fiddling with the app whenever a guest wanted to play something off their phone. Now Bluetooth just works, and a turntable, TV or computer can use line-in. Alexa is built in, and volume works from the top touch strip.

It measures 17.8 x 13 x 18.3 cm and weighs 2 kg — bookshelf, kitchen counter, desk, nightstand. Not water resistant, so keep it out of the bathroom and off the patio.

4.5 stars, 2,677 reviews, #6 in Smart Speakers and #19 in Home Audio Speakers. One is plenty for a bedroom or study; for a living room, budget for two and run them as a stereo pair — the difference is not subtle.
