Worth Buying: SHOKZ OpenRun Bone Conduction Headphones — Hear Traffic While You Run, $169.95 CAD

Amazon.ca has the SHOKZ OpenRun bone conduction sport headphones at $169.95 CAD. Prime members ship free; otherwise free shipping on orders over $35.

No discount here, but it earns a mention on its own.

Bone conduction sends vibration through your cheekbone straight to the inner ear, leaving the ear canal open. Running, cycling or working in the garage, you hear your music and your surroundings at the same time — a car coming up behind you, someone calling your name, a dog barking. You don't have to pull an earbud out. In-ears can't do this, and noise cancelling does the opposite.

26 grams with a titanium hook, and it plays nicely with glasses — SHOKZ left room in the frame. Long wears don't leave your ears aching the way earbuds do, and there's nothing to get sweaty and sealed up.

Bass is the inherent weakness of bone conduction, so don't expect it to match in-ears at this price. The 8th-generation driver with PremiumPitch 2.0+ handles vocals and podcasts clearly, which is what most running playlists actually are.

IP67 means sweat and rain are fine — but not swimming. The magnetic charging port has moisture detection and will warn you rather than short out. 8 hours of playback, and a 10-minute quick charge buys 1.5 hours if you forgot to plug in. Bluetooth 5.1, 10-metre range, multipoint pairing.

Rated 4.4 from 26,391 reviews, ranked #11 in Open-Ear Headphones, 500+ bought last month. In this category, SHOKZ is the default answer.

Two practical notes: OpenRun comes in Standard and Mini — measure around the back of your head, and if it's under 9.25 inches, get the Mini. And it's not for swimming; the OpenSwim line is.

You buy this at full price not because it's a bargain, but because nothing cheaper solves the same problem.
