It is late October and there is no snow yet, but ice melter is the thing you only remember to buy on the morning it snows, when the only bag left on the shelf is the expensive one. This one works from -9°C down to -31°C, which is well past where plain rock salt gives up — rock salt stops being much use around -10°C, right when a January cold snap hits.

The pellets combine four active ingredients with a corrosion inhibitor, so they are gentler on concrete, metal, lawns and gardens than straight salt. They leave a residual brine behind that helps stop ice from re-forming.

The jug has a shaker top, so you can spread it without a scoop, or pour it into a Scotts spreader. It ranks #1 in Snow & Ice Melters with 4.4 stars from 800+ reviews. At 4.5 kg for $10.99, it costs less than half what a gas-station bag runs mid-winter.
