Two things ruin hand mixers: the noise, and the way a cheap one throws flour across the wall the moment you switch it on. This one runs a 400W DC motor rated under 60 decibels, and it uses a soft-start ramp — it eases up from speed 1 instead of slamming straight into the mixing.

The nine speeds are set with touch buttons and shown on a digital display, which is easier to read at a glance than the usual dial. Speed 1 handles thick dough and mashed potatoes, speed 9 whips egg whites and cream, and a Turbo button gives you a burst when you need one mid-batch.

The box is complete: two flat beaters, two dough hooks, a 304 stainless balloon whisk, and a storage case that clips onto the body so the attachments are not rattling around a drawer.

4.3 stars from 6,890 reviews, ranked #11 in Hand Mixers. At $50 you usually get five speeds and no display. If you bake a cake or a batch of muffins now and then, there is no real reason to haul home a several-hundred-dollar stand mixer for it.
