Worth Buying: Seagate Portable 4TB External HDD — Plug-and-Play Backup for PC, Mac & Console! $264.99 CAD

Amazon.ca lists the Seagate Portable 4TB external drive (STGX4000400) at $264.99 CAD. That's its standing price — there's no discount running on it right now. Prime members ship free; otherwise free over $35.

It's here because it's the least risky pick in its category, not because it's cheap: #1 in External Hard Drives, #11 across all of Electronics, and 4.6 stars from more than 267,000 ratings. A sample that size says more about long-term reliability than any spec sheet.

The hardware is unremarkable in the way you want: a 2.5-inch mechanical drive, 260 g, 11.7 × 8 × 2 cm, USB 3.0 with an 18-inch cable in the box. Plug it into a PC and it's recognized immediately — no drivers, no setup wizard, just drag and drop. It also works as expanded storage on PS4 and Xbox, which is where a lot of these end up.

Two things worth knowing before you buy. Mac owners have to reformat it first (one reviewer needed Apple support to walk through it), so budget ten minutes. And it's spinning rust, not flash: expect roughly 120 MB/s reads, and one buyer's 2 TB photo transfer took about ten hours. If speed matters more than capacity per dollar, an SSD is the answer. The plastic enclosure is functional, not premium.

It ships with a one-year Rescue Data Recovery plan, which is more useful than the warranty if the drive actually fails. For Time Machine, a game library, or cold photo backup, 4 TB will hold most households for two or three years.
