1. Brewers beat Rays 4-1 to win first World Series in franchise history

The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time. Milwaukee beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, to take the series 4-1. It is the franchise's first title; the Brewers' only previous World Series appearance came in 1982, when they lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Game 5 was a meeting of the two aces. Milwaukee's Cy Young candidate Jacob Misiorowski threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts before leaving with an apparent leg cramp. Tampa's Drew Rasmussen was pulled after four innings on short rest and a reported pitch count of 60. Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt sparked the offence with an RBI single in the second that scored Brice Turang, then ran his streak to six straight at-bats with a hit, the most for a rookie in Fall Classic history.

William Contreras doubled in a run in the sixth and then scored on Pratt's sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. The Rays used seven pitchers and did not break through until Liam Hicks and Chandler Simpson doubled in the ninth. Contreras was named World Series MVP after batting .381 with four RBI, and Trevor Megill got the final six outs. "Milwaukee has waited 44 years and Milwaukee you have your world championship," owner Mark Attanasio said.

2. Without Leonard, Raptors find their blueprint in 129-99 win over Magic

Source: Sportsnet

The Toronto Raptors beat the Orlando Magic 129-99 on Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena in the first of a two-game home set that resumes Friday. With Kawhi Leonard out as he tries to settle swelling in his left knee, the Raptors looked like the team they need to be, with Jamal Shead, Ja'Kobe Walter, Collin Murray-Boyles and Jamison Battle all seeing the floor.

RJ Barrett carried the load and Scottie Barnes bounced back from a scoreless 0-of-12 night against Minnesota on Sunday, giving Toronto the one-two punch it needs while Leonard is out. "You don't have an opportunity to add a player like Kawhi Leonard that easily... him wanting to come home and us believing he's a great fit for our team, it was an easy decision to make," head coach Darko Rajakovic said.

The Raptors made the playoffs last season for the first time in four years and nearly reached the second round by clawing and scrapping. Wednesday's win was the proof of concept they were looking for: the young core has to hold up without Leonard.

3. Late goal sinks Maple Leafs as Bobrovsky allows five in 5-4 loss to Kraken

Source: Sportsnet

Sergei Bobrovsky allowed five goals on 17 Seattle shots in a 5-4 loss to the Kraken on Wednesday, finishing with a .706 save percentage, his worst performance as a Maple Leaf. It was the ninth time in 10 starts this season that he has allowed three or more goals; he is 3-5-2. On Monday against the Flames he gave up three goals on Calgary's first 12 shots.

Toronto had tied it when Auston Matthews scored 6-on-5 just 53 seconds before Brandon Montour blasted the winner with 32 seconds left. Coach Jim Hiller was reluctant to criticize his goaltender publicly: "I thought he was alright. The last one, he probably would want that one back, but one goes off a toe, one goes off a stick." Matthews added: "It definitely stings. But there's nothing that we can do now."

4. McDavid's two assists help Oilers blank Flames 4-0

Source: Edmonton Journal

The Edmonton Oilers trounced the Calgary Flames 4-0 at Rogers Place on Wednesday night. Connor McDavid had two assists, Kasperi Kapanen was in on two goals and scored off a McDavid pass in the third period to make it 3-0, and goaltender Tristan Jarry delivered the shutout.

In the Edmonton Journal's player grades, McDavid and Kapanen both earned an 8. McDavid set up Joseph for the 1-0 goal in the first period, then on an early third-period power play fed Bouchard before sliding the puck to Kapanen at the crease. Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each scored a 7, with Nugent-Hopkins also collecting two assists. Colton Dach was a menace at the net and knocked Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf out of the game. Grade A shots finished 13-8 for Edmonton.

5. Sargent's 86th-minute winner keeps Toronto FC's playoff hopes alive

Source: Sportsnet

Josh Sargent scored in the 86th minute to lift Toronto FC to a 2-1 win over D.C. United on Wednesday night at BMO Field, keeping his team's slim playoff hopes alive. Sargent had earlier set up the equalizer, heading a corner that deflected off Jonathan Osorio and in during the 64th minute.

The winner came after Theo Corbeanu's shot hit the post and rolled to Sargent, who knocked it home. Andre Dozzell had opened the scoring for United in the 29th minute. "This team just doesn't give up and fights to the end," Sargent said. "A massive result for us and on to the next one." Osorio added: "Every game is a must-win."

The win pulled Toronto FC level with Red Bull New York on 39 points, but Columbus leapfrogged both by beating FC Dallas 2-0 to reach 41 and take sole possession of the final wild-card spot. It was the home finale for TFC, which visits Atlanta on Sunday and closes the regular season Nov. 7 at the Philadelphia Union.

A first-time winner will take the CFL's most coveted individual honour. The league announced Wednesday that Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander and wide receiver Tyson Philpot, along with Edmonton Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo, are the finalists for the George Reed Most Outstanding Player award. Alexander and Philpot are first-time finalists; Fajardo was a runner-up in 2019.

In his second year as the full-time starter, Alexander passed for 5,257 yards with a 72.1 completion percentage, throwing 35 touchdowns against four interceptions, and became the second Alouette to top 5,000 passing yards in a season after Anthony Calvillo. He led the league with 37 completions of 30-plus yards. Fajardo set career highs with 4,788 passing yards and 25 touchdown passes, rushing for 517 yards and eight majors as the Elks claimed their first West Division crown since 2015. Philpot led the league in receptions (124, third-most all-time), receiving yards (1,809) and receiving majors (13).

Adarius Pickett of the Toronto Argonauts, Clarence Hicks of the Calgary Stampeders and Darnell Sankey of the BC Lions are the finalists for Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Winnipeg's Trey Vaval is in the running to become the CFL's first back-to-back Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, against Calgary's Tyreik McAllister and Edmonton kicker Vincent Blanchard. The finalists were chosen by 56 members of the Football Reporters of Canada.

8. WNBA Finals Game 6 moved to a matinee, and the Dream are not happy

Source: The Globe and Mail

The WNBA announced Monday that Game 6 of the Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream was moved from 8 p.m. ET Thursday to 12:30 p.m. to accommodate an NBA regular-season game between the Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers already scheduled in the same building. The game at State Farm Arena can seat more than 17,000, compared with about 3,500 at the Dream's usual home, Gateway Center Arena.

In an open letter to fans on Reddit, the Dream's ownership said it raised concerns about potential NBA scheduling conflicts two months ago and reiterated them throughout the playoffs, but the concerns "did not receive the attention, nor the urgency that they deserve." The statement added: "The Atlanta Dream has earned the right to be taken seriously. Playing a midday game on a Thursday is not what we would have chosen and not what we fought for." Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the move gives thousands more fans a chance to see a championship game. More than 10,000 tickets sold in the first 90 minutes and the game is now sold out.

9. China says it takes Mbappé's apology 'seriously'

Source: ABC News

China's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it has taken Kylian Mbappé's apology "seriously" after the French star's comments about Mao Zedong triggered a backlash. "We take seriously the apology he has made," ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a daily briefing. Mbappé faced the fallout on Tuesday over remarks made in an online interview, losing brand deals with at least three Chinese companies — beverage maker Dongpeng, dairy giant Mengniu and cheese maker Milkground — which each said they oppose "any words and actions that hurt national sentiment."

Mbappé apologised on Tuesday, saying: "My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world." He added that he has deep respect for the Chinese people and their history.

China Media Group said it has suspended broadcasts of Spanish league matches and other games featuring the player, and demanded an apology from La Liga, Mbappé and Real Madrid. La Liga president Javier Tebas issued a public apology on Tuesday. In an online column Wednesday, the People's Daily said that once a public figure crosses the line, "he becomes a brand's negative asset."

10. Report: 75% of Canadians are women's sport fans, but can't find the games

Source: CBC

A report commissioned by Canadian Women and Sport and released Tuesday found that 75 per cent of Canadians now call themselves fans of women's sport, up from 67 per cent two years ago — yet 62 per cent of fans surveyed say they don't know where to find professional women's league games or the content they are looking for online. The study was conducted by IMI International in August 2026 with a representative sample of more than 2,000 Canadians aged 13 to 65.

The report also found a perception gap on coverage: respondents estimated women's sport gets 30 per cent of media coverage, while the study says it actually represents between nine and 21 per cent on traditional channels.

Zoe Boyd, a star with PWHL Hamilton who grew up in Caledon, Ont., watched Hockey Night in Canada with her family every Saturday. "I couldn't ever have dreamt it. It just wasn't a possibility in our minds," she said. This season she will be a regular on the CBC showcase as the PWHL enters its Hockey Night in Canada era.
