Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli crossed the line in tears at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on Sunday, becoming the youngest world champion in Formula One history at 20 and Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. He did it in only his second season.
"We did it," he said. "I wouldn't be here without Mercedes, without my family. This moment is one that will live for ever. I am speechless. I am just trying to process this moment." His mother, father and sister wept and embraced in the stands.
Before the season began, the paddock consensus was that Mercedes had the fastest car and George Russell was the title favourite. Antonelli became F1's youngest pole-sitter in China and took his first grand prix win by five seconds; wins in Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco followed, with Monaco his fifth in a row and a lead of 66 points over Lewis Hamilton and 68 over Russell. At Monza he won from 19th on the grid; only John Watson, from 22nd at Long Beach in 1983, has won from further back.

2. Jackson needs thumb surgery, Ravens' season in jeopardy

Lamar Jackson needs surgery on the thumb he injured on Baltimore's first offensive snap against Buffalo on Sunday and may not return in 2026. "That'll be a surgery deal. He'll go to injured reserve," coach Jesse Minter said after the 36-10 loss. "That's a tough deal."
Jackson had missed three games with an ankle injury before returning. His right hand struck Bills pass rusher Greg Rousseau's arm on a pass attempt to Zay Flowers; he left the field pointing at his thumb and watched the second half from the sideline with a splint. Backup Tyler Huntley injured a toe in the second quarter, leaving undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano to make his NFL debut.
Baltimore fell to 4-4 with a third straight loss and hosts Jacksonville on Thursday night. "It's very tough when you have a warrior like him go down," linebacker Roquan Smith said. "This game don't care who you are at any time." Minter, in his first season after replacing John Harbaugh, said his job is to keep the team together and avoid pointing fingers.

3. Broncos rally past Chiefs 28-24 to take AFC West lead
Source: TSN
Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes on fourth-and-goal on the final play as the Denver Broncos beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday. Denver improved to 6-2 and moved into first place in the AFC West, a half-game ahead of Kansas City (5-2), which lost its second straight.
Denver trailed 24-13 early in the fourth quarter before Bo Nix threw a 2-yard touchdown to Nate Adkins and found Jaylen Waddle for the two-point conversion. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal wide right with 2 1/2 minutes left in steady rain, and the Broncos needed two plays and 35 seconds to take the lead: a 51-yard catch by rookie running back Jonah Coleman, then his 5-yard touchdown run.
Mahomes had just under two minutes to answer, but a false start on right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped out an apparent game-winning throw to Rashee Rice, and Roach got home for a 6-yard loss with four seconds left. It was Sean Payton's 200th career victory and Nix's 15th game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime, passing Dak Prescott (14). Mahomes dropped to 80-3 in his career when leading by double digits in the fourth quarter.

4. Buccaneers win 16-0 without completing a pass
Source: Sportsnet
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 on Sunday without completing a single pass. It is the first time a team has won a game without a completion since 1974, and only the second time in the Super Bowl era.
Baker Mayfield finished 0 for 3. "I'll do whatever it takes to win," he said. "That's all that matters to me." Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell combined for 310 rushing yards, and the Bucs defence intercepted Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. four times.
Tampa Bay has won two in a row after a 1-5 start, with a combined 62 passing yards in those victories, and is back in the NFC South race. Elsewhere, the Detroit Lions handed the Minnesota Vikings their first loss of the season, but linebacker Jack Campbell was taken off on a stretcher with a neck injury and will stay overnight in hospital for evaluation.

5. Cowboys collapse at home; Jones calls it 'an indictment of the whole show'
Source: TSN
The Dallas Cowboys lost 33-30 in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals in Arlington after leading by 14 points in the fourth quarter. Cardinals kicker Chad Ryland missed a PAT in the final seconds of regulation, forcing the extra period. "It's an indictment of the whole show," owner Jerry Jones said.
Arizona is 3-5 but has beaten Dallas five consecutive times and is 5-0 at AT&T Stadium. Tyler Allgeier broke free for a 63-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, and the Cardinals added three more touchdown drives in the fourth, the last covering 80 yards in 63 seconds without any timeouts.
Dallas is 3-5. Dak Prescott went 19 of 29 for 195 yards and the running game averaged 2.4 yards per carry. Jones refused to single out coach Brian Schottenheimer: "None of us are getting it done." Prescott said: "At this point, talk is cheap. We've got to go write on our story."

6. Toronto FC eliminated from playoff contention for sixth straight season
Source: Sportsnet
Toronto FC's playoff hopes ended Sunday with a 3-1 loss to Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, extending the club's post-season drought to six consecutive seasons. Substitute Lewis Morgan gave Toronto a late lifeline with a volley from inside the box in the 79th minute, but it was the only one of TFC's three shots on target to find the net.
Atlanta (9-18-6) snapped a six-game winless run at home, while Toronto (9-12-12) was left to reflect on another season that fell short after earning points in four of its previous five matches. "Disappointment. Disappointment," coach Robin Fraser said. "We certainly feel like throughout the season at various times we've played well enough to be a playoff team."
Captain Jonathan Osorio shared the frustration. "I'm just very disappointed that we weren't able to make the playoffs this year with the team that we have," he said. "We let the fans down." Miguel Almiron, Cooper Sanchez and Alexey Miranchuk scored for Atlanta. Toronto is now 0-5-5 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since October 2017 and closes its season Saturday at Philadelphia.

7. Tomkins, 32, wins in first start in 928 days as Oilers beat Rangers
Source: Edmonton Journal
Edmonton-born Matt Tomkins stopped 28 of 29 shots as the Oilers beat the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. It was the 32-year-old's first NHL start in 928 days and just his seventh NHL game, his last appearance coming in April 2024 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Connor McDavid scored 50 seconds into the first period to give his goaltender some breathing room. "He was awesome for us, he gave us a chance to win," McDavid said. "He's a great dude. He worked so hard this summer in Edmonton. I'm just so happy for him."
Tomkins has played for the ECHL's Indy Fuel and the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, and in Sweden, Syracuse and Bakersfield. "It's been a long road trying to get to the NHL and year after year I haven't given up that hope and desire to play in this league," he said. The Oilers are 11-2-2 and first in the Western Conference; the Rangers are without Igor Shesterkin, who is done for the season.
8. Doncic scores 45 as Lakers beat Raptors 131-125
Source: Sportsnet
Luka Doncic had 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 131-125 on Sunday. In his first season in Los Angeles as the singular star after LeBron James's departure, Doncic leads the NBA at 37.7 points per game.
The Raptors cycled Jamal Shead and Collin Murray-Boyles onto him and even put Scottie Barnes on him, but Doncic made eight of 12 three-point attempts, all of them contested and self-created. "When he's ready to go, he's unstoppable," Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic said. "There's not a lot of people on this planet that can do that."
Barnes finished with 29 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, RJ Barrett had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and reserve Jamison Battle scored 15 points in four minutes to cut the lead to five. Toronto, missing Kawhi Leonard (knee) and Jakob Poeltl (left shoulder bursitis), dropped to 3-2.

9. Canadiens edge Penguins 5-4 for fifth straight win
Source: Global News
Montreal returned home from a four-game road trip that produced all eight points and beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Sunday for a fifth consecutive win. It was not tight hockey, but it was winning hockey.
The fourth line got it started: Florian Xhekaj moved the puck up to Owen Beck, who fed Oliver Kapanen for a one-timer and his first goal of the season. Twenty-four seconds later Josh Anderson wired a shot into the top corner. Montreal scored twice in 27 seconds in the second period, Lane Hutson's spinning pass setting up Alexandre Texier before Chris Kreider slid home a rebound; Kreider finished plus-four.
Goaltender Jacob Fowler allowed four goals on 29 shots, his save percentage falling from .942 to .932, though his Goals Saved Above Expected rose to a league-leading 10.2. Nick Suzuki is close to returning. Columnist Brian Wilde also noted that Nikita Kucherov, reportedly seeking six years at $20 million a season, has Montreal on his ten-team trade list, but GM Kent Hughes will not trade the future for him.

10. Predators acquire Shane Wright from Kraken for Matthew Wood
Source: Daily Faceoff
The Nashville Predators and Seattle Kraken swapped young talents, with centre Shane Wright going to Nashville and winger Matthew Wood going to Seattle.
Wright, the fourth-overall pick, had not lived up to that pedigree in Seattle: he had three goals and one assist for four points in 14 games this season, well off his 19-goal, 44-point campaign in 2024-25. He is in the final year of a three-year entry-level contract with an $886,666 cap hit and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
Wood, at six-foot-four and 202 pounds, had 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points in 71 games as a rookie, but has one goal and two assists in 14 games this season. He is also in the final year of his entry-level deal, with a $950,000 cap hit, and will be a restricted free agent. Nashville is betting Wright can finally solve its long-term centre depth.
