The Kaleido 3 panel is the whole story: comic covers, cookbooks and illustrated non-fiction finally show up in colour, and you can highlight in four colours instead of one, then see every highlight by chapter at a glance. The usual colour E Ink trade-off applies — the background reads a shade greyer than a black-and-white reader and colours are muted rather than phone-bright. Most people accept that trade in person; if you only read plain novels, a mono reader is the better buy.

At 174 g it's light enough to hold one-handed for an hour, and 16GB holds thousands of books. IPX8 means 60 minutes in two metres of water is survivable, so bath and pool reading stop being a risk. ComfortLight PRO handles colour temperature and there's a Dark Mode for reading in bed.

The real reason to pick Kobo over Kindle in Canada is Libby/OverDrive built into the OS: with a library card you borrow directly on the device — no computer, no format conversion, no Calibre. There are also no lock-screen ads on any Kobo model, where Amazon charges extra to remove them.

491 ratings at 4.4 stars, with the complaints mostly about the grainy look of colour E Ink and one lost package rather than the hardware. The line that comes up from Kindle converts: smaller store, much better library borrowing.

$272 undercuts a Kindle Colorsoft by a wide margin, and the battery is user-replaceable down the road.
