Travelpro is the brand flight crews actually carry, and Altitude is their lighter, sleeker line. The whole point of this bag comes down to two things: it's sized to the letter of the personal-item limit, and it expands.

At 16 x 13.5 x 7.75 in and 3 lbs it holds 20 litres. One reviewer flew four legs with it — mainline jets and regional props, aisle and window seats — and it slid fully under the seat every time instead of fighting for bin space. Anyone who's done a red-eye with a roller knows what that's worth.

Unzip the side expansion and you get 24 litres, 20% more room — a weekend's clothes plus a toiletry kit.

The organization is finer than the price tier suggests: separate padded sleeves for a laptop up to 16" and a tablet, 7 pockets across 5 compartments, an RFID-blocking ID TheftBlock pocket for passport and cards, a pocket sized for a tracker, two discreet anti-theft pockets, and a magnetic QuickSlip side pocket for your phone. There's a key leash, and the rear stacking strap slides over a roller handle.

The shell is high-density ballistic ECOFAB woven from 100% recycled plastic bottles with a DuraGuard coating that resists stains and scrapes. YKK zippers throughout, airline-grade aluminium hardware, full-grain leather at the touch points. The side pockets take an 18oz bottle or an umbrella and collapse flat when empty.

Covered by Travelpro's Limited Lifetime Coverage plus a one-year trusted companion promise that covers repair costs if an airline damages it (new purchase, registration required).

One 4-star reviewer's only real complaint was the price. Fair — there are cheaper bags with a similar feature list. What you're paying for is the zippers, the material and the warranty, which happen to be the parts that fail first on the cheap ones. If you fly ten-plus times a year, or you're tired of carrying a personal item and a laptop bag at the same time, this one replaces both.
