A commuter bag really only has three jobs: keep the laptop safe, let you find things, and stop someone on a crowded subway from opening the zipper behind your back. This one solves the third with a built-in combination lock — not a padlock dangling off the pull, but a lock body set into the zipper that opens only with your code.

34 litres across three zones: a padded 15.6-inch laptop compartment, a main compartment for clothes and odds and ends, and a front section with small pockets and a key hook so you are not emptying the whole bag to find a cable. At 20 x 11.8 x 5.5 inches it works for the daily commute and a two- or three-day trip alike.

The shell is water-resistant 300D nylon, and the shoulder straps are wide and padded. At 830 g it is not light, but the weight spreads reasonably well.

There is a USB port and a headphone port on the side. The USB one is a pass-through: you put your own power bank inside and connect it to the built-in cable. The bag does not carry a battery — worth saying plainly, because it is an easy misread.

4.5 stars from more than 37,000 reviews, ranked #175 in Luggage & Bags and #5 in Laptop Backpacks. Under $40, there are not many anti-theft commuter bags with that kind of review history.
