This solves a very specific household problem: one person can't follow the dialogue, so the TV goes to maximum volume and everyone else suffers. The RS 195 puts the sound in the headphones instead, so the TV can be muted or kept low and each person listens at their own level.
It uses RF wireless rather than Bluetooth, which keeps latency low enough that lips and audio stay in sync while watching movies, and it's rated for a 100-metre range — walk to the kitchen or the bathroom without dropping the signal. There are several listening modes, one of them built specifically to lift speech and push back background music and room noise, which does a lot for the mumbled dialogue in dramas and news. Volume and balance are adjusted right on the headset, and the buttons are deliberately large so you're not hunting for them by feel. Battery is rated at 18 hours, and it charges by sitting back on the base.
Hearing loss is where it earns its keep: the cups fit over hearing aids without you taking them out. One reviewer bought two sets for a husband who is almost completely deaf — one for the bedroom TV, one for the movie TV — and said there's no distortion and the house no longer has to live at that volume. Another mentions finally being able to watch TV in an apartment without the neighbours' set bleeding in.
Two things to know up front. It connects through the base station via optical or analogue output, which not every TV makes convenient, so read the manual once. And if you try to run the TV speakers and headphones at the same time, headphone volume in the enhancement modes runs low and you'll hear a bit of echo — a non-issue if you're the only one listening. It's also tuned for intelligibility, not audiophile music listening; fine for music, but that's not the point. 1,129 reviews average 4 stars, which is normal for this category.
At $599.95 a lot of people hesitated. At $299.95 — half price — it's cheaper than replacing the TV if someone in the house is turning the volume up every night.
