A home doesn't print much, but it can't avoid it entirely: school forms, tax paperwork, the occasional photocopy of an ID. This does printing, copying and scanning in one box — flatbed scanner on top, 150-sheet tray below so you're not feeding paper every few pages. At 39 x 34.3 x 14.85 cm and 6.2 kg, it fits a desk corner or a shelf and one person can move it.

Speeds are 16 ppm black and 9 ppm colour, plenty for household use. It joins your Wi-Fi so phones, tablets and laptops can all send jobs, and the Brother Mobile Connect app handles scanning and ink monitoring from your phone.

It takes LC501 cartridges and ships with starter cartridges. Be clear-eyed about this: the cost of an inkjet isn't the printer, it's the ink. LC501 singles aren't expensive, but black plus three colours adds up separately, so heavy photo printing gets costly while plain black-and-white documents stay cheap.

Two things to know. It's a simplex printer — no automatic duplexing, so double-sided documents mean flipping the paper by hand. And Wi-Fi setup is hit or miss: some reviewers had it running in minutes, one had a one-star experience stuck on the router's WPS button. The reliable route is pairing through the Brother Mobile Connect app; if that fights you, install the driver over USB first, then switch to wireless.

The 3.9-star average is middling for an Amazon printer, and the negative reviews cluster around network setup rather than print quality. At $69 for a colour all-in-one, it's a fair deal as long as you can get it on your network.
