Worth Buying: Airthings Wave Radon Detector — Continuous Monitoring, No Lab Fees, Nothing to Mail In! $199 CAD

Amazon.ca currently has the Airthings Wave smart radon detector (2nd generation) for $199 CAD. Prime members get free shipping; otherwise free on orders over $35.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, and Canada has plenty of it — basements and ground floors especially. The usual approach is a test kit: leave it out for three months, mail it to a lab, wait, and get a single average for that window. Radon fluctuates daily with weather and pressure, so one snapshot doesn't tell you much. This unit runs on two AA batteries, mounts on a wall and monitors continuously, with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly trends in the free app over Bluetooth.

Wave your hand in front of it and the LED ring goes green, yellow or red. It also logs humidity and temperature, which is genuinely useful in a basement — you can see when the dehumidifier should actually be running instead of guessing.

One thing worth knowing up front: it isn't on Health Canada's list of recommended detectors. A reviewer who placed it next to a Health Canada–approved unit found the readings very close, so treat it as a monitoring tool rather than a compliance report. Honestly that's the more useful job: telling you whether you have a problem at all, and whether your mitigation work (a sub-slab depressurization system, for instance) actually did anything.

Batteries last about 1.5 years. For 24/7 remote access you'd add an Airthings Hub; to check from your phone at home, you don't need one. The 5-year extended warranty requires registering on Airthings' site within 30 days of purchase.

If someone lives in the basement, or the house is older than 20 years, $199 for a full year of live data beats a one-off lab test.
