The Brazil was Bodum's first coffeemaker back in the '80s and it's still the most recognisable thing they make — heat-resistant borosilicate glass beaker, red polypropylene handle and base, three-part stainless steel plunger.

The appeal of a French press needs no explaining: coarse grounds in, hot water on top, wait four minutes, press. One brew fills a litre, enough for two or three cups, and it does it quietly and far more cheaply than a pod machine. The lid has a patented safety design so it doesn't splash when you push down.

A few realities worth knowing up front. Coffee seeps between the glass and the plastic base, so every so often you have to pull the beaker out of the frame to clean it — do that over something soft, because the glass comes out and it can also shatter. The mesh is fine but not absolute; a few grounds occasionally make it into the cup, and a coarser grind helps. And the glass is bonded to the base, so if it breaks you can't buy a replacement beaker — it's a whole new press.

The colour runs a little deeper than the product photos; in person it's a dark, true red that looks good sitting on the counter. Dishwasher safe.
