260 lumens with an 80-metre beam — Energizer rates it 4x brighter than standard LED tech. Brightness isn't just on/off: it dims from 10% to 100%, so you can turn it down inside a tent without blinding whoever's next to you. Three modes cover high, spot and wide, plus a red LED for when you don't want to kill your night vision.

Runtime is rated at 35 hours on six AAA batteries, and they're included in the box, so it works the moment you open it. Water resistant shell, fine in rain.

One honest quirk of this style of headlamp: tilting it down throws a glare off the bottom lip of the lens. A strip of black electrical tape across that edge fixes it — worth knowing so you don't think you got a dud.

Works out to about $7.50 a light. One for the garage toolbox, one in the car or the emergency kit. Two branded headlamps for less than most no-name singles.
