Amazon.ca has the SUOCO travel vacuum bag set — 12 bags (4 small, 4 medium, 4 large) with a rechargeable electric pump — for $29.99 CAD, down from $39.99. That's 25% off. Prime members ship free; otherwise free shipping on orders over $35.

There's really one reason to buy this: avoiding a checked bag. Compressed clothing takes up less than half the space, so a 20-inch carry-on swallows what would normally be a checked bag — and one round trip pays for the set, given domestic checked-bag fees run thirty to forty dollars each way.

Sizes are matched to luggage: small 24×16 in for a 20-inch carry-on, medium 28×20 in for a 24-inch, large 32×24 in for a 28-inch. Pack by category and you won't have to excavate the whole case at the hotel.

The pump is cordless and rechargeable over USB, so a laptop or power bank works and foreign outlets don't matter. 4000Pa of suction at 140 L/min compresses a bag in 10-15 seconds with no rolling and no kneeling on the floor. The pump is small enough to travel in the suitcase, so you can re-compress dirty laundry on the way home — that's the part hand-roll bags can't do.

Pump and bags

The bags are thickened PA+PE with a triple-seal valve and double zip lock, and the clear material lets you see what's inside without opening. 1,470 ratings at 4.2 stars, ranked #6 in Space Saver Bags.

Two honest caveats: the pump is better built than the bags, and some pumps give out over time, leaving you to pump by hand; and a few bags slowly lose their seal, so a compressed bag can creep back up over several days. Don't count on these for long-term seasonal storage of duvets — for a trip, they're more than enough, and for long-term storage a proper bin is still the better answer.

One tip: run the zip twice in both directions before pumping. An inadequately sealed zip is the most common cause of a bag that won't hold, and checking it takes ten seconds versus discovering at the airport that nothing compressed.
