Small dogs should not eat the same kibble as a lab, and the most obvious reason is the size of the piece. This formula is cut small so a Chihuahua, Pomeranian or toy poodle can actually pick it up instead of swallowing it whole. It is built for the adult years, roughly ages one to six.

On ingredients: chicken for quality protein to hold muscle, a balanced split of protein, fat and carbs to keep them at a healthy weight, and easy-to-digest components including pumpkin to support digestion and firmer stools. There is also a prebiotic fibre and antioxidant blend Hill's calls ActivBiome+, positioned around gut, immune and organ health. That is a formulation claim rather than something you will measure at home, but the ingredient direction is sound.

It ranks #11 in Dry Dog Food with 14,931 reviews at 4.5 stars and more than 900 bags sold last month — a very stable record for kibble. The recurring themes in reviews are a shinier coat and better energy, with a few owners noting firmer stools after switching. Switch over seven days rather than all at once.

A 2.04kg bag runs a small dog roughly three weeks to a month depending on weight. At $31.99 it is $8 under the usual pet-store price. If your dog already eats this, it is a good time to restock; if it is the first bag, start small before committing.
