It's not a purifier that turns tap water into distilled water — it filters as you drink. The activated carbon block cuts the taste and smell of chlorine and reduces particulates along the way. Plenty of Canadian cities run chlorinated water that's hard to drink straight; through this bottle it tastes noticeably cleaner.

The 36 oz capacity is the point. Most filter bottles hold 20-odd ounces and need refilling two or three times a day; a litre gets you through half a day. The straw is enclosed, the lid pops open on a one-handed button, and there's a carry loop for the gym, a bike ride or the office. The seal holds — it won't leak lying sideways in a bag.

One filter handles about 40 gallons, and Brita suggests changing it every two months. Over a year that's roughly 300 single-use 500ml bottles you're not buying. Replacements are the standard Brita bottle filters and available in any supermarket.

4.6 stars across 11,000+ reviews. Long-term users mention two details: the body has a grippy texture so it doesn't slide out of wet hands, and it goes on the top rack of the dishwasher.

Two caveats. It isn't a thermos — the insulated shell keeps water cold for a few hours, not all day. And rinse a new filter under warm water for at least 45 seconds before the first use, otherwise you'll get black carbon dust in your first glass. A fair number of the bad reviews come from skipping that step.
